Good Morning, RVA: Are you pretty cool?
A mid-August reprieve from the heat makes me suspicious.
Good morning, RVA! It’s 63 °F, and today’s looking pretty cool–just like you! Highs will stick in the early-to-mid 80s (…just like you?), and there’s a wee chance of some rain later this evening.

Late Saturday night, police were called to the 6300 block of Midlothian Turnpike to investigate a fatal shooting. This would be Richmond’s 26th and the Southside’s 18th murder of the year. This time last year, the city had seen six fewer murders.
With the explosion in local beer and brewing comes a secondary explosion in hop farming. I had no idea that so many of my favorite local beers use local hops in someway or another. Surely an all-Virginia-grown beer already exists? If you know of one, shoot me an email or let me know in the comments.
Richmond Bizsense has a picture up of the new footbridge over the canal. I don’t know why, but feats of civil engineering get me excited.
In Ferguson, Missouri–a mostly-black, working-class suburb of St. Louis–an 18-year-old, unarmed youth was shot and killed by a police officer. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch has a profile of the victim, Michael Brown.
Sports!
- Squirrels snapped their zillion-game losing streak on Friday and went 2-1 against Portland over the weekend. They have the day off before traveling to New Hampshire tomorrow.
- Kickers clipped Charlotte Eagles, 2-1.
- Nats went 1-2 against the Braves over the weekend. They also have the day off.

An Analysis of the Relationship Between Highway Expansion and Congestion in Metropolitan Areas
Despite the snoozy, academic title, this traffic study is super interesting and easy to read.
One example of this was London’s Hammersmith Bridge, which in February 1997 was closed to all traffic except buses and cyclists. London’s Transport Department surveyed people who used the bridge a few days before it closed, and then contacted the same people in the weeks following the closure. Of the commuters who used the bridge to get to work, some switched to public transit and others chose to walk or bike. Overall, 21 percent no longer drove to work. And remarkably, congestion in the surrounding areas has not markedly increased.

The rva ipa from hardywood is all locally sourced. They do limited runs though
@Tim is the grain in the RVA IPA from Virginia as well? I thought it was just the hops, but that would be awesome!
