Good Morning, RVA: April showers bring…

…new basketball coaches?

Good morning, RVA! It’s 60 °F, which would be so, so much better if it wasn’t supposed to rain throughout the morning. Highs in the mid-70s will make you curse the overcast skies, but only a little bit because not wearing socks for the last couple of days has been really nice.

Water cooler

#betterwithbedden returns! This time with a petition to get the School Board’s budget requests fully funded. It’s hard to tell how the budget will shake out, but the current state of things lacks the money to fund a bunch of stuff–including the new fine arts / advanced placement / career readiness program at Binford Middle. Zachary Reid at the RTD has a bit more.

Richmond’s filled with tons of super old cemeteries, and Nicole Cohen, writing for Richmond Magazine, has a guide to them all. It seems weird to spend your free time strolling through a cemetery, but they’re all beautiful and incredibly interesting. I highly recommend it!

Looks like Senator Rand Paul will officially join the 2016 presidential race today.

Ha! IN YOUR FACE, map about concealed weapon permits that does not include Virginia!

Sports!

The last 18 hours have been filled with misinformation and rumors about VCU’s next basketball coach. First it was former assistant Mike Rhoades who now coaches at Rice. Then it was former assistant Will Wade who took the head job at Chattanooga. Source have confirmed, denied, and everything in between. Whoever the the next head coach of VCU basketball may be, we should know in the next couple of days at the latest.

But, if you do like to speculate, here’s a look at the “Chaos” system Coach Wade runs at Chattanooga–should seem vaguely familiar.

  • Nats lost their opener to the Mets, 1-3.
  • Duke beat Wisconsin in the NCAA championship, 68-63.

This morning’s longread

I Followed My Stolen iPhone Across The World, Became A Celebrity In China, And Found A Friend For Life

Anyway, it’s like February 2014 and I’m out drinking my $20 happy hour bottle of wine when someone comes into the bar and swipes my phone off the table. Honestly, it’s genius. I applaud the person who took my phone. I bet you he stole 20 phones that night. It’s the perfect place to steal phones. Bravo. Genius.
Anyway, I call my phone and it goes straight to voicemail: the international sign of death. I was never seeing that phone again. The phone was gone.

Then I become famous.

I felt real emotions reading this, you guys!
