Good Morning, RVA: An extra day!

Due to the poor planning of our Gregorian calendar, today you get a free day.

Good morning, RVA! It’s 53 °F, and today you should be on the lookout for highs in the upper 60s and gusty winds. If it weren’t for a bit of cold weather dropping into town at the end of the week, I’d say spring has sprung. Maybe next week!

It’s a leap day–a day that occurs every four years except years divisible by 100 but not by 400. This graph of the date of the summer solstice due to leap shifting over the last 400 years will have zero impact on your life but is pretty to look at. There are 306 days remaining in 2016, do something awesome with them.

The Richmond-Times Dispatch has officially endorsed Marco Rubio in tomorrow’s Republican primary. This is a good piece to read–even if you couldn’t care less about Marco Rubio, Republicans, or primaries in general–if you want to get a clear picture of the editorial stance of the RTD. It’ll give you some context to put around the rest of their editorials.

FYI, Joe Morrissey is gathering signatures for a mayoral campaign.

While the list of Oscar nominees was boringly white, the programming was anything but. Every bit of the show that wasn’t devoted to handing white people awards was a long conversation about race and racism in Hollywood and America. Two things you’ll want to watch: Chris Rock’s opening monologue and Lady Gaga performing with victims of sexual assault. Also, Joe Biden was there! On stage! Here’s the full list of winners.

Todd VanDerWerff reviewed Fuller House for Vox. His tweet review is better: “Fuller House made me feel like I was an empty burlap sack shaped like a man, and I was full of bugs, and the bugs moved me around.”

Sports!

  • Rams picked up a vital win against George Washington, 69-65.
  • Spiders beat the Dukes of Duquesne, 83-67.
  • #3 Wahoos beat the #7 Tar Heels 79-74. UVA is now one game back in the ACC, behind both UNC and Miami.
  • Hokies picked up their second road win in a row, this one against Wake Forest. They’re now 8-8 in conference and have locked up a first-round bye in the ACC tournament.

The Easiest Way to Lose 125 Pounds Is to Gain 175 Pounds

Nothing about this sounds particularly easy.

My compulsive eating had little to do with hunger and was almost never enjoyable. Instead, it was like trying to chase a vague, indefinable comfort, some satisfaction that never arrived – or even could arrive. It was the fear of missing out, but for food and constantly. I would struggle to pick between two fast food places and just stop at each of their drive-thrus, hiding the soda cup and the wrappers from the first one so the second cashier wouldn’t see, because being caught in my embarrassing act was somehow more shameful than the actual behavior I was committing. The idea of just waiting for another day just wasn’t realistic to me; I absolutely, compulsively had to get that sandwich from Wendy’s. The act of ordering the food, of making the conscious choice to indulge, was far more important than eating the stupid thing.
