Good Morning, RVA: Again?

Good morning, RVA! It’s 57 °F and very, very rainy. The rain will continue for most of the day, and the temperatures will drop a bit as Hurricane Joaquin has decided to head out to sea. This makes our weekend outlook a lot less dire than expected, but you’ll still need to keep an eye on flooding in your area due to all this rain (here’s our ongoing list of closures).

By now you’ve heard about the mass shooting in Roseburg, Oregon. You can watch the president’s remarks, but here’s the part that resonates with me: “Somehow, this has become routine. The reporting is routine. My response here at this podium ends up being routine. The conversation in the aftermath of it. We’ve become numb to this.” It’s hard to watch this, to listen to the news, and to not feel totally helpless.
Vox, in response to the president’s request in those remarks, has put together this graph of deaths from gun violence vs. deaths from terrorism. They’ve also collected these 17 graphs showing how much of an insane outlier America is when it comes to guns. I know you’ve seen all of these before.
Here’s the piece about the city’s finances that I thought would come next week (thanks to Katy Burnell Evans and Ned Oliver’s hard work at the RTD), and I bet you can guess whether or not the 2014 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report Was turned in by the self-imposed October 1st deadline. Are we ready to hold someone accountable for this fiasco? As Ned Oliver reported yesterday, this will begin to impact basic city operations.
Alfredo Prieto was executed last night at 9:17 PM at the Greensville Correctional Center in southern Virginia.
After all that news, I feel like I need a beer. Robey Martin tries her best to convince me that the current seasonal beer transition, away from delicious Oktoberfests and Märzens to pumpkin beer, is OK. I disagree, and will patiently drink Miller High Lifes until wintertime Stouts and Brown Ales start pouring.

- Spiders return to action against Maine, Saturday at 3:00 PM. You can get tickets here.
- Hokies host Pitt Saturday at 12:00 PM. VT is now playing without their starting QB, DB, and LB.
- Nats pulled out a 3-0 win against the Braves. A new series against the Mets begins tonight at 7:10 PM.
- D.C. United takes on the New York City FC tonight at 7:00 PM (in the rain).
- Washington and the Eagles face off at 1:00 PM on Sunday.

A tumor stole every memory I had. This is what happened when it all came back
Through persistence, luck, and maybe something more, an incredible medical procedure returned my mind and memories to me almost all at once. I became the man who remembered events I had never experienced, due to my amnesia. The man who forgot which member of his family had died while he was sick, only to have that memory, like hundreds of others, come flooding back. The memories came back out of order, with flashbacks mystically presenting themselves in ways that left me both excited and frightened. With my health back, I was able to live a life again, but it’s not the same life as it was before. The tumor changed me forever. And I am grateful for it.
