Good Morning, RVA: A year in review

It’s that time of year when we read about the stuff we’ve already read.

Good morning, RVA! It’s 53 °F, and so much for yesterday’s predicted high of 73 °F, right? Disappointing! As for today, it’s foggy and there’s a solid chance of rain this afternoon. Fingers crossed, for tomorrow things may begin to dry out.

There are two days left in 2015 which means writers everywhere are looking back and writing “The Year in…” pieces–or, if they’re smart, they wrote those pieces two weeks ago and are sitting quietly by themselves drinking coffee and staring off into space. For the RTD’s Annie Tobey, who recaps the year in beer, I hope it’s the latter.

Style Weekly has a bunch of those very same recap articles, and you should go pick up a physical copy and read them all. Until then though, check out their recap of the entire year of 2015 to which they give a score of +22.

Here’s a very Richmond sentence: “GRTC Transit System is planning to expand bus service in Carytown to serve the four grocery stores clustered near the intersection of Thompson and Cary streets.” We’re nothing if not lovers of grocery stores.

What in the world! Midlothian High School Student Essence Mitchell has perfect attendance since kindergarten!? Impressive!

Richmond Magazine’s Paul Spencer talks to Susan Roberson and Marsha Taylor about (healthy) changes coming to Richmond Public School cafeterias. The Garden Patch Program, which we’ve written about before and I talk about constantly, is part of these changes.

This person tracked every book she read in 2015 in a spreadsheet, which, like, doesn’t everyone do this? I do the same for movies and find it super rewarding.

Finally, the New York Times year in graphics is a pleasant way to spend your morning.

Sports!

I really enjoyed these 2015 highlights and resolutions for VCU basketball by Aaron Williams. Onto 2016!

  • Rams look to make it three in a row tonight against North Florida at 7:00 PM. Catch it on CBS 6.1.
  • Spiders fell to the nearly-ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders, 70-85.
  • Hokies have a weirdly timed 12:00 PM tipoff against #19 West Virginia, which you can watch on ESPNU.
  • #5 Wahoos finish up their non-conference schedule against Oakland tonight at 6:00 PM on ESPNU.

This morning’s longread

The Death of Evan Murray

As football season wraps up, read this piece.

Among the spectacles of our sports-entertainment complex, there are only two in which people are regularly killed — not accidentally, but directly as a result of that sport’s essential identity and, more ghoulishly, that sport’s essential public appeal. One of them is auto racing. The other is American football. Of the two, there is only one in which children are now regularly killed. That sport is not auto racing. That sport is American football. This weekend, the sport killed another child.
