Good Morning, RVA: A sunshiney day

Hey December, you’re not so bad.

Good morning, RVA! It’s 40 °F right now, which seems cold, but today’s highs should clock in right around 60 °F, which seems lovely for the first third of December. Expect plenty of sun and an all-around pleasant day.

The Planning Commission voted yesterday to close a tiny bit of Brook Road, right where it ends into Broad Street. Remember, this has nothing to do with either the Maggie Walker statue or The Tree That Must Not Be Named. Assuming City Council agrees with the closure (it’s on their agenda for Monday), planners will now put together a…plan…for the newly formed urban plaza, the Maggie Walker statue, and You Know Who.

Richmond Speaks, the group the City has tasked with figuring out some next steps for the Lumpkin’s Jail site, released their draft report on community engagement (PDF). There’s a community meeting to go over some of the findings and “vote on priorities and recommend next steps” this coming Thursday at 6:00 PM at the University of Richmond. You should also read Ned Oliver’s piece about all of this to catch the vibe that this is a complicated situation and that not everyone’s super stoked on the current process.

Leah Small, writing for Style Weekly, says that the new Stone Brewing Co. brewery will be open and functional by May! That seems crazy fast. I feel like just yesterday they were floating their massive fermenters down the river. The restaurant, beer garden, and Sugar Pad revamp will take form over the next couple of years as we work our way through public meetings, planning processes, and plenty of PDFs.

Today is the 20th anniversary of Mekong! The RTD’s Annie Tobey sat down with An Bui to talk about what it’s like to successfully do a thing for 20 years.

Richmond Magazine has named their Richmonder of the Year–and it is totally not a person. When you read the article keep an eye out for the rad illustration of a monument that I’d love to see somewhere around town.

Sports!

  • #10 Wahoos host #14 West Virginia tonight at 7:00 PM, that’ll be on ESPN.
  • Washington fell to the Cowboys, 16-19, after the later scored 13 points in the fourth quarter.

‘I Want to Be a Boy Scout.’ There’s Just One Hitch.

And that hitch is a taut-line hitch! JK, the hitch is that they are girls and not boys.

In this liberal-minded community, about two hours north of San Francisco, a group of girls ages 10 and 13 who have named themselves the Unicorns want to formally join the Boy Scouts, the 105-year-old organization that has long considered itself the cradle of American male leadership. None of them want to be boys — they just want to play like them.
