Good morning, RVA! It’s 65 °F. Saying that today’s weather will be “nearly the same” as yesterday’s, while factually true, doesn’t really do either day justice. Look forward to the kind of beautiful weather that convinces folks they need to live here–today’s the day for visits if you’ve got any friends on the fence.

Water cooler

150 years ago today, in Petersburg, Union and Confederate troops fought in the Battle of the Crater. The Union plan was simple: dig a giant tunnel under the Confederate forces, load it up with a ton of explosives, and blow it all to bits. It worked incredibly (and surprisingly) well, but, after the explosion, things went to crap and the siege of Petersburg would last nine more months.

I don’t think the media’s gleeful coverage of former governor Bob McDonnell’s corruption trial qualifies as news–it qualifies as gross and disappointing, but not news. However, it will probably be the thing folks are talking about around literal and figurative water coolers today.

Possibly related, who can tell, is this riveting front-page headline from the Washington Post: “In a sea of choices, are Spanx jeans the new jeggings or sausage casing?

Check out these crazy pictures of flooding at UCLA after a water main burst. You definitely would never catch me boogie boarding in gross runoff flood water–but, hey, college!

Sports!

  • Squirrels over Harrisburg 5-2. They’ll play at 12:05 PM today (working ball game!) and won’t be back in town until August 5th.
  • Nats manhandled by Marlins, 0-3, look to avoid the sweep today at 12:40 PM.

State of the Keg

Style Weekly’s annual beer issue has a good overview of RVA’s growing (exploding?) craft beer scene.

A host of new breweries and bottle shops have shot up across town, with restaurants and bars expanding their tap lists and brew-centric festivals proliferating at a rate that surprises even this festival obsessed region…And yes, the denizens of this fine Commonwealth are drinking the hell out of it.
