Good Morning, RVA: 2016!

Pack it up, pack it in, 2015. It’s time to begin 2016!

Good morning, RVA! It’s 34 °F, and today plans on staying legitimately cold and clear. Highs of 38 and zero chance of rain make me feel a little less weather-discombobulated.

Over the weekend, Richmond Police reported that Tyrese Minor, who was stabbed December 30th on Williamsburg Road, died from his injuries. This leaves Richmond with 40 murders in 2015–two fewer than in 2014. WTVR is reporting two murders over the weekend, but I haven’t received anything official from the police yet.

Katy Burnell Evans has a great overview of the direction the Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority is headed under T.K. Somanath. He’s got some hard decisions to make after years of mismanagement before he got there–sound familiar? Definitely worth a read if you’re interested in the City’s affordable housing initiatives (Somanath was the head of the Better Housing Coalition before taking the reins at RRHA).

Richmond’s School Board will meet tonight to hear public comment on the 2016-2017 Superintendent’s Estimate of Needs, or SEON–an acronym I quite like. You can read his SEON directly, via these PDFs, or you can read a recap from the RTD’s Louis Llovio.

Wow, this bag of Letters to the Editor are really…something. One threatens the return of slavery, only “twice as bad,” and one ends with “Wake up, America.” Just because you write your Facebook comment on a piece of paper and send it in to the RTD doesn’t make it less of a Facebook comment!

Pleasants Hardware on Broad Street is closing, but Pleasants Hardware on Broad Street has been closing for a long time, hasn’t it?

People love Downton! And the Downton people love Richmond!

This situation in Oregon is bananas. I forget that that entire state is not just Portland but also really big and really remote. I’ll tell you what though, I’m not a fan of bearded white dudes (or any dudes at all!) arming themselves and taking over federal property–no matter how remote that property may be. I will also link to this article.

An Unbelievable Story of Rape

It’s like Making a Murderer, but a longread.

An 18-year-old said she was attacked at knifepoint. Then she said she made it up. That’s where our story begins.
