Fatal fire on Stonewall

Fire started around 7:45 Monday night.

Fire crews have confirmed that a body has been recovered from a residential apartment building in South Richmond Monday night after a fire.

The fire started around 7:45 p.m. in an apartment on the 6th floor of the building at 1920 Stonewall Ave. Occupants of the building were evacuated and many have been sheltered in the lobby across the street.

Fire crews confirmed one person was transported to VCU Medical Center for non life-threatening injures. Crews have the fire under control.

The body of a female was found in the 6th floor apartment. An arson investigator has been called to the scene. The body is being transported to the Medical Examiner to determine the cause of death.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
