Doughnuts and barbecue, pinch me I’m dreaming
Your one stop for a maple bacon doughnut, pork barbecue, and a funnel cake. I’m in love.
I’ve let the entire Hills and Heights community down and for that I apologize. Way back in November, The Treat Shop RVA opened up on Jahnke Road and I didn’t cover its opening. In fact I was oblivious and that is an injustice to you all. I set out find out more about this new business on the way to work this morning. Little did I know this morning as I walked in from the rain what gloriousness awaited. Freshly made doughnuts were laid out before me in all their caloric glory each one a siren song to my expanding waistline.
I’ll get back to the doughnuts but in talking with one of the owners Shawn Davis I found out that they also make Carolina style barbecue. He asked if I wanted a sample. I’m not saying that everyone should start their day off with a bite of glazed doughnut, quickly followed by a bite of smoked pork that has a kick of vinegar and a bit of char but it sure made my Friday morning on a drizzly Friday. The shop also offers chili cheese dogs and chili cheese fries and if they had been offered I would have accepted.
I brought in doughnuts to the office and the one you see above (not my picture, we ate the model) is the Samoa. Our panel of round pastry experts concluded after extensive testing that this doughnut was a serious challenger to other doughnuts of similar name in the Richmond area. The toasted coconut and saltier caramel set it apart. The other doughnuts that were tested faired equally as well.
The sweet train doesn’t just stop in doughnut town, oh no it heads straight into the County Fair. They’ll make funnel cake on the spot or fry an Oreo, all the tasty joy of the State Fair without heading up I95. Finally let’s talk ice cream 24 flavors await and I’m sure it’ll be a big hit come the dog-days of summer.
To top it off this is a local endeavor.
The Treat Shop RVA is included in the VA Enterprise Zone helping to enhance the community we live, work and grew-up in. Our family has lived in the Southwest district for over 30 years attending Richmond Public Schools which include, Westover Hills Elementary, Elizabeth Reed Elementary, Lucille Brown Middle, George Wythe High school and Huguenot High school. We also are alumni of the local college and universities here in Richmond and surrounding areas as well which include J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, Virginia Union University, Virginia Commonwealth University and Virginia State University.

RICHARD!! My man, I feel so accomplished each time I get through a festival without partaking of a funnel cake!! Now you tell me they are a mile away? I am considering that if I eat JUST funnel cake, maybe I could still lose the weight? Perhaps go light on the powdered sugar? And who can pass up Carolina BBQ, my favorite. I will have to do the donut tasting in my office where donut snobbery reigns. Maybe 2 slimfast shakes a day and a funnel cake for dinner….? I’ll figure it out.
