Fifteen story apartment building could be on the way.
A proposal to build condos at the end of Tobacco Row has slowly been working its’ way through the maze of city hall. The next chapter occurs tonight.

Council will weigh in on two measures regarding developer David White’s proposed Pear Street condominium project. The measures would close a portion of East Cary Street and permit the construction of a 65-unit high-rise near the corner of East Main and Pear streets. The project was scheduled for a vote in June, but was amended and the vote postponed. The amendments lowered the maximum building height from 16 to 15 stories, as well as the maximum height of each residential story from 14 to 11 1/2 feet.
Geoffrey Cooper, president of the Church Hill Association, calls the amendments “trivial,” adding that the height of the building would still block the view from Libby Hill Park, the major sticking point for neighborhood residents and those opposed to the development.
“To pretend that something isn’t OK at 16 stories but is OK at 14 stories is duplicitous,” Cooper says.
River View advocates submitted this letter to city council back in March which outlines the issues they have with the proposed condo development.
