Binford Middle School to host Centennial Celebration April 29th

Events started yesterday and will culminate on the 29th.

In recognition of its 100th anniversary, Binford Middle School will host A Centennial Celebration April 29 at 6 p.m. Created by the school’s faculty and staff, the theme for the event is Binford Middle School, Pride of the Fan:  Our stories, our legacy. During the celebration student artwork will be on display in addition to music, dance and slam poetry from students in partnership with local bands and the Latin Ballet.

In keeping with the event’s theme, teachers have crafted opportunities to engage students in helping to tell the story of Binford Middle School and encourage them to leave their mark as many of their predecessors have done over the years. The goal is to engage the 21st century middle school student in examining the past, how it connects to their present-day experience and how it may impact future generations of Binford Lions.

All projects were made possible through a grant from Partners in the Arts at the University of Richmond with the generous support of Communities In Schools, the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, Long and Foster, Visual Arts Center, Sixth Baptist Church, The Life Church, Binford PTA, Virginia Commonwealth University Department of Art Education, Art 180: long term project and the Fan Woman’s Club.

A list of events that will take place is as follows:

  • Friday, April 8 – Photographer and director of youth education at the Visual Arts Center will be at Binford to photograph the seventh grade students to create individual portraits that will be a collective group project on display at the Binford Centennial Celebration on April 29.
  • Friday, April 8 – Visiting artist John Blake will be on site working with Binford sixth-graders as they create slam poetry in Mr. Jonathan Walker’s language arts classes.  Slam poetry performances will take place at the Binford Centennial Celebration on April 29.

Binford alumni are invited to share their most memorable middle school story as part of the centennial project by emailing: Tracee Hogans-Foster at tfoster@richmond.k12.va.us.
