A child is taken hostage in a botched burglary on the Southside

Two men are sought after attempting to burglarizing a residence, during which they briefly took a young child hostage in a standoff with the child’s parents.

Richmond Police are asking the public for help in identifying two men involved in a botched burglary that left one of the burglars with significant head injuries.

On Monday evening, the two sought men were burglarizing a home in the city’s south side, when the occupants, a couple and their young child, returned home. The men, one armed with a rifle, took the child hostage and demanded money. During the stand off, the father struck one of the men in the face with a hammer before being shot by the other man.

The father is hospitalized in critical condition.

Although both men were wearing bandanas to cover their faces, it is believed the injuries suffered by the one struck by the hammer are serious enough to require medical attention. Both men are black males in their late teens or early 20s with slim builds, wearing dark clothing. They are considered to be armed and dangerous.

Anyone with information about these individuals or this crime is asked to call Detective Christopher Foultz at (804) 646-6996 or Crime Stoppers at 780-1000. Citizens can also text Crime Stoppers at 274637, using the key word “ITip” followed by your tip. Both methods are anonymous.
