Richmond Fire crews are investigating after a large, 3-alarm fire at a warehouse on Gordon Avenue near Commerce Road in South Richmond on Saturday morning.

Fire crews say the call came in around 7:08 a.m. for a fire at the River City Recycling plastic recycling facility at 1104 Gordon Avenue. Crews arrived at 7:11 a.m. and tried to get inside, but because of the burning barrels of plastic, they were forced back out.

The fire was raised to two alarms at 7:32 a.m., then to three alarms at 7:49 a.m. when, due to the fire and heat, parts of the roof and sides of the building began collapsing. 12 fire crews and two Battalion Chiefs were called to the scene. The fire was marked under control at 10:34 a.m.
