Veka “Shawn” Chham—2016 Homicide #7

Mr. Chham was killed in last night’s double shooting on Southside. Here’s what we know so far.

We’re calling this a homicide because it has been officially termed as such by the Richmond Police Department. Before you tell us we’ve missed one–was it actually a death investigation (often self-defense)? Was it within city limits? Did the person die of wounds received in a different year? All of those deaths do not get officially counted as Richmond homicides for this year.

Update #1 — March 25, 2016; 2:21 PM

Police have charged an individual with the murder of Veka “Shawn” Chham. See the Investigation section below.

Original — February 10, 2016

Victim

Veka “Shawn” Chham, age 30, of 300 block of South Dearing Avenue, Fresno, California

The Incident

  • Where: 5748 Thorndale Lane on Southside.
  • When: Police were called at 9:52 PM on February 9th.
  • Weapon: Gunshot wound(s).

The Investigation

Shawn Chham was found on the second floor of the house. He died at the hospital from his gunshot wounds. Also found in the house, on the first floor, was the body of Akeem J. Williams, also with gunshot wounds. Williams’s death is being treated as a death investigation (which could mean a variety of things, including self-defense or suicide). It’s not clear whether the police believe there was a third party involved, or whether Williams himself committed the homicide.

Because Williams has not been ruled a homicide, he is not included on our ongoing list.

The police have said that they believe this was drug-related and that their investigation is ongoing as they talk to neighbors and work strong leads.

UPDATE on March 25th, 2016:

Police have announced that they have charged Japell Christian, 34, of the 5700 block of Yates Lane for the homicide of Veka “Shawn” Chham.

Christian was already in custody for another matter, but has now been charged with (in addition to murder) attempted robbery, abduction, use of firearm in commission of a felony (x3) and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Also, the corresponding death of Akeem J. Williams has been ruled as a justifiable homicide.
