Cafe Verde closing for good

Not sure at this time when the last taco or cupcake will be served.

Update #1 — July 7, 2014; 12:45 PM

Judging from the note on the door and Facebook, Cafe Verde after attempting to reorganize and come back in the fall has decided to throw in the towel.

Cafe Verde opened earlier this year with the hopes to bring vegan tacos and cupcakes to the late night Shockoe crowd.  Apparently the crowd isn’t eating them up at the pace needed to survive. The following was posted on Facebook on May 30th.

Dear Friends:
We have loved growing and serving you in our brief existence. Unfortunately sales have been dismal lately and Ed Edge’s salary as a paramedic is unable to subsidise the deficit much longer. We’re sorry to say that if things continue on this path we may have to close up shop.

We are asking you to support a business who is dedicated to PASSION OVER PROFIT. Our passion for showing people how feasible and wonderful a compassionate plant based diet can be. If you have any suggestions on how we can better serve you please do not hesitate to let us know.

With all the love in the world,
-The Family

Then the news that they plan to close for the summer (no clarification on what exact day that’ll be) to revamp and a link to collect funds for the project. The GoFundMe project hopes to raise $3,400 and isn’t live yet so hold off on sending in your cash.

Dear Friends,
We will be closed for the rest of the summer while we renovate our atmosphere, improve our products, expand our menu, and polish our presentation. We received your feedback and feel that we aren’t living up to your expectations as Richmond’s only vegan restaurant. Our goal is to serve you better while simultaneously making people interested in a compassionate lifestyle.

We cannot do this alone sadly. But with your support, we can come back and provide you the wonderful vegan oasis you deserve.

The GoFundMe project hopes to raise $3,400 and isn’t live yet so hold off on sending in your cash.

This will enable us to renovate so that we can come back from summer break with a much better atmosphere and product. Our goal is to live up to the expectations everyone has for Richmond’s only vegan restaurant. Your support is vital in our mission to spread the message of how easy and wonderful a compassionate plant-based diet can be.

My wife and I ate at Cafe Verde a few months ago as the restaurant we were going to go to was already closed for the night. The tacos were Taco Bell quality and much more expensive. The cupcakes, while good, tasted like a box mix. The service was good as was the Mexican soda, but product and presentation definitely needs improvement. I wish them luck with revamping!
