FOOD! RVA Barista Jam
Having been a barista myself since the age of 13, I was excited to find out about the RVA Barista Jam. Both a competition and a community event, the second incarnation of the Jam will be held on Wednesday, April 14 at GlobeHopper Coffeehouse & Lounge.
Having been a barista myself since the age of 13, I was excited to find out about the RVA Barista Jam. Both a competition and a community event, the second incarnation of the Jam will be held on Wednesday, April 14 at GlobeHopper Coffeehouse & Lounge (2100 E. Main Street).
Some of the GlobeHopper staff just got back from a national Barista competition, and I love that Richmond has decided to hold a local version. From the Barista Jam website:
A Barista Jam is the less formal, jeans and tee shirt wearing cousin of the Barista Competition. The Jam offers an environment where local baristas can show off their skill and creativity in a friendly competitive environment among their peers. Above all else though, the Barista Jam is a way to have a lot of fun with people who share the same job or interest, try some great drinks and maybe take home some cash!
The Jam, organized by Blanchard’s Coffee and Advanced Coffee Tech, were looking for a way to bring together all those who love coffee for education, competition, and camaraderie. When I worked at Starbucks, we were trained to cultivate the “third place,” a place outside of home or work where people could gather with others in the community, and I love the idea of using a little friendly competition to do this at local coffee shops.
They are still looking for judges for the night’s event and I’m hoping they’ll pick me. I’m completely a coffee nerd and the idea of having multiple hand-crafted espresso beverages handed to me sounds like heaven.
Their Facebook page has video and photos from last month’s event and notices about giveaways and prizes offered in April. There are still a few slots open for competitors, if you’ve been itching to show off your foam art skills.
