Well, I’ve had the time of my life…
It’s a sad day for movie fans — particularly movie fans who were kids in the ’80s and wore out their cassettes of the Dirty Dancing soundtracks while dancing around frenetically in the basement with their sisters. It’s a sad day for movie fans — particularly movie fans who were kids in the ’80s and wore out their cassettes of the Dirty Dancing soundtracks while dancing around frenetically in the basement with their sisters. Last year in a wave of nostalgia, I Netflixed that classic romance and was surprised to learn several things about that film that my ten-year-old self glossed over (to my mom’s relief, I’m sure), but one thing hadn’t changed. My heart still pounded to that classic rhythm: “Da-dum, da-dum, da-dum.”
But then my ears pounded to the sound of my spouse shouting, “TURN IT OFF.” There’s no accounting for taste.
What better way to celebrate the great Swayze than taking a poll I just made up??
1. Which is more romantic, Dirty Dancing or Ghost?
2. Who was more emotionally repressed in Point Break, Bodhi or Johnny Utah?
3. If we could stage a dance-off between Swayze of 1987 and Travolta of 1977, who would win? (Go ahead and picture how joyously weird that occasion would be.)
4. And last but not least, what’s the best Swayze moment in movie history?

1.) Why do I have to choose? My loyalty is with DD, but that pottery scene in Ghost is the stuff of legend. Either way, five minutes of either one kicks Footloose’s ass.
2.) Bodhi (Keanu Reeves wins in the talent repressed category however)
3.) How frustrating is it that we probably could have arranged this meeting at some point over the last 20 years. (Swayze. Definitely.)
4.) When he’s doing that West Side Story/snap & walk thing down the aisle at the end of DD with the staff behind him and Baby on the stage. Smolder. I still get chills when I hear that song.
4) ALL OF RED DAWN!!!!!!
Lesley, #4 is so true.
ooooh I forgot about Red Dawn. And The Outsiders.
Wolverines!!!!
Donnie Darko!!
1. Oh Dirty Dancing. Definitely. Those Cabins reek with sex.
2. Utah. Bodhi was so emotionally connected with the waves and the thrill of donning that mask and his buddy Anthony Kiedis…. oh my, I may have to watch this tonight in memoriam.
3. I think that overly botox-ed screaming lady on that reality dancing show will have to decide this. I am not qualified. Wait. Neither is she.
4. All of Roadhouse.
Two words: Road House
Point Break. My room mates and i watched it last night. Reeves and Swasye… there’s some slash in the making
It’s so hard to choose. I haven’t seen Red Dawn in years. But Roadhouse is on at least once a month on cable.
1. Both movies suck. Yes, I said it.
2. Utah by far. No question. Point Break is the best Swayze movie ever. Maybe the best movie ever. Bodhi is kinda my hero. Except when allll his friends died. It happens I guess?
3. Who cares? But probably Travolta. He backs it up in Pulp Fiction with the Twist.
4. Best moment? Have to look to Point Break, clearly. That movie probably has the top 5 moments in Swayze movie history. “It’s not tragic to die doing what you love.”
I’d love to see Travolta do a triple pirouette…and come out of of it looking like he could kick your a**…or reenact romance novels.
As weird as this sounds, my brother and I were both raised almost exclusively on the soundtrack to Dirty Dancing for the first few years of our lives. Those were good times.
