Weather! Sunny, seasonal weather ahead

For Monday, the cold front that brought rain on Saturday night and overnight Sunday morning has moved offshore, and high pressure is back in place. We’ll see mostly clear skies, with highs in the low 80s and lows in the in the upper 50s.

Let’s kick off this Monday morning with a look at the tropics:

The big story right now is Major Hurricane Igor, which developed rapidly Sunday, going from Tropical Storm strength (maximum sustained winds 70mph) at 5pm Saturday to Category Four strength (maximum sustained winds 150 mph) by 11pm Sunday night, and is still intensifying.

The good news about Igor is that there’s general agreement among the forecasters at the National Hurricane Center and most of the models that Igor will ride around a large ridge of high pressure centered near the Azores, and stay out to sea. If you’ve got plans to head to Bermuda anytime soon, Igor should be watched. If you’ve got late-season beach plans, Igor will likely kick up some rough surf and create some strong rip currents as it gets closer to the East Coast.

Behind Igor is newly-formed Tropical Storm Julia. It’s really too soon to say what’s going to happen to Julia over the longer term, but in the meantime, it looks to ride along that same ridge of high pressure that will be steering Igor. There’s no immediate threat for anyone, unless you’re thinking about a trip across the pond on the QE2.

The NHC is also monitoring an area of disturbed weather in the eastern Carribbean (circled in orange above). There’s a medium chance of it developing into a tropical cyclone within the next 48 hours, and it definitely bears monitoring.

A very fall-like pattern is setting up across the region. For those looking to hang on to summer, we’ve still got temperatures in the 80s, though Saturday’s high temperature out here in Blacksburg was a chilly 60 degrees.

For Monday, the cold front that brought rain on Saturday night and overnight Sunday morning has moved offshore, and high pressure is back in place. We’ll see mostly clear skies, with highs in the low 80s and lows in the in the upper 50s.

Another cold front approaches on Tuesday (remember what I said about that fall pattern?), but with dry air in place throughout the atmosphere, we won’t see more than some stray clouds, especially during the day. Plan on some warming in advance of the weak frontal boundary, with highs in the mid 80s. Overnight lows should drop again into the upper 50s.

The cold front passing through will be very weak, and we won’t see much of a change in temperature into midweek. In fact, most of the week ahead looks to be partly to mostly sunny, with highs in the 80s. Enjoy it while we still have time! I’ll have another forecast on Wednesday.

  1. RVA, enjoy your 80 temps while you can!! Those days are long gone out here in mountain country.

  2. Long gone? Blacksburg has only had 6 days in September with highs less than 80, and the highs on the 12th and 13th were 76 and 79 respectively. They’re not as far gone as you might think. :)
