Weather! Less smoke, more storms ahead

Tomorrow – it’s just like today, but one day closer to Friday.

In case you missed it, the smoke lingering in the air this morning wasn’t due to anything local, but the result of a wildfire in Pender County, North Carolina. A Code Red air quality alert expired at 6pm this evening, but you may still continue to notice smoke in the air as southerly winds continue through tonight.

We hit a high of 92 today, and while the radar looks to be mostly clear, there have been a few showers and thunderstorms that have fired mostly north and easy of town. There may still be some scattered showers or storms that blow through tonight, but nothing organized or severe is getting together at this hour. Plan on lows tonight in the lower 70s.

As we move into Thursday, another system passing through tomorrow will spur some late morning precipitation in the form of some showers and thunderstorms starting in the western parts of the sate and moving eastward; the best chance for precip around Richmond look to be between about 10 and 2 tomorrow. Take an umbrella with you to lunch tomorrow. Depending on the extent of storm-related cloudcover, we could see temperatures up into the low 90s again. If storms are fairly widespread and stick around into the afternoon, then we’ll see some suppression of those numbers. Again, expect overnight lows in the lower 70s.

We’re locked into the pattern for at least the next few days; high temperatures in the low 90s with afternoon thunderstorm chances and lows in the lower 70s well into the weekend. I’ll have an update, along with forecasts for this weekend’s Flying Squirrels homestand, on Friday.
