Weather! Remembering when weather was “Super”

I’ve got a look back at some very white weather from March 1993, and a look ahead to another wet forecast early this week, but there’s some good stuff in store for the end of the week…

Last week’s rain put a bit of a dent in our rainfall deficit. We’re down to being 1.34” short for the year as of Sunday evening.

Speaking of Sunday, March 13th marked the 18th anniversary of the 1993 Superstorm – or, if you prefer, the “STORM OF THE CENTURY.” (Emphasis mine, but only slightly.) Thanks to nerds far bigger than me, I’m able to bring you live TV coverage from The Weather Channel from March 13th, 1993.

High pressure is setting up over the northeast, while a weak cold front that passed through the region today stalls out across the Carolinas. We’ll see some clouds from time to time on Monday as winds out of the northeast pull in some moisture off the Atlantic. It will keep temperatures down as well, reaching only the mid 50s for highs. Clouds will build in especially later in the evening, as an area of low pressure travels along the stalled-out cold front to the south. Lows overnight will only drop to near 40.

Some light rain builds in on Tuesday as the low tracks east along that cold front. It won’t be much, but grab an umbrella anyways. Mostly cloudy conditions in the morning will give rain to some light rain later in the afternoon, which will moderate temperatures significantly, with highs only in the low 50s and overnight lows in the upper 40s. I don’t expect to see much more than about a tenth of an inch of rain.

Both the wind and rain will pick up some overnight into Wednesday, with some periods of gusty winds as the low lifts out of the Tennessee Valley and across Virginia, bringing a warm front and then a cold front across the region in a relatively short period of time. The rain will intensify in the morning hours before cutting out as the cold front passes through. It’s a little too early to say, but there may even be the chance for a rumble or two of thunder. Temps will climb into the mid 60s, before dropping into the mid 40s overnight.

High pressure will move across the southeast for the later half of this week, with the possibility of even some temperatures near 80 (80!) by the time Friday rolls around. Stay tuned…
