Weather! Relief on the way? Not quite yet

I hope you all enjoyed both Independence Day and Independence Recovery Day, toasty as they were. We’ve now hit 100 four separate times this year, which is the most since 1993 (6). We may tie this number over the next two days.

I mentioned on Friday that NOAA is now issuing experimental sea nettle/jellyfish forecasts for the Chesapeake Bay. Another link I want to include is the to National Weather Service’s Surf Zone Forecast. Worried about rip currents? If not, you should be. The United States Livesaving Association estimates that rip currents kill in excess of 100 beachgoers every year, and are responsible for 80% of lifeguard rescues. The risk of rip currents in the Surf Zone forecast is rated either low, medium, or high, based on the risk of strong or frequent rip currents.

There’s not much escape from the heat for Tuesday. I suppose one can take some solace in the fact that we won’t approach the record for the day (105, set in 1977), but it’s still going to be hot. Another day of hot, dry air brings us highs in the lower 100s and lows in the upper 70s.

Wednesday is more of the same — highs in the low 100s, lows in the upper 70s. We’ll have a chance to tie the record high for the day (103, set in 1977), as we again stay mostly clear.

I’m watching two systems approaching the region through the latter half of the week that will finally give us a break from the triple digits and bring some rain chances with them. I’ll have another update on Thursday.
