Weather! Rainy week ahead
There’s more rain in store for the rest of the work week, but we get a reprieve for the weekend. A cool, sunny autumn weekend sets up just in time for the Folk Festival.
It’s been a little drier than expected today, but some showers are finally beginning to move into the region tonight. To this point, most of the heavier precipitation has been banished to areas along and west of the Blue Ridge; however, western areas closer to I-95 have been seeing some intermittent rain over the last couple hours.
An area of low pressure situated off the South Carolina coast is slowly moving north, winds aloft are pulling in plenty of Atlantic moisture from the south. It’s also pulling a little bit of warm air in with it, keeping temperatures reasonably mild for the next couple days.
In fact, temperatures aren’t going to fluctuate much on Wednesday. It’s currently 66 degrees at Richmond International, and while we’ll cool off a couple degrees in the overnight hours, temperatures will only climb back to near 70 tomorrow. Rain showers will continue on and off through the daylight hours, tapering off some in the afternoon as the low begins to pull away from the Virginia coast. Skies will stay overcast when it’s not raining, finally dropping into the upper 50s overnight.
A cold front begins its approach from the west on Thursday, keeping mostly cloudy skies in the picture. Some showers will coincide with the front’s arrival. There’s some uncertainty with the timing of the front’s arrival as of yet, but it looks like the best timing for this will be from Thursday evening into Friday. Some clearing on Thursday will allow temperatures to climb up into the mid 70s, falling back into the low 60s overnight.
Temperatures take a dive behind the cold front as it passes through by Friday morning. Highs will fall back into the upper 60s by the weekend as a ridge of high pressure settles in behind the front. Winds will pick up behind the front as well, making Friday quite breezy. They’ll still be up some on Saturday, but die down again Sunday and Monday. The good news is that this means we’ve got great weather in store for the Folk Festival and all the outdoor events planned for this weekend. Unfortunately, this high doesn’t stay around long, as another frontal system moves in early next week. Don’t stash that umbrella too far away – you may need it again next week.
