Weather! Rainy for the 10K

Although temperatures will be fantastic for running a 10K this morning, some showers will try to put a damper on the festivities, but there’s gong to be plenty of warm, sunny weather to make up for it later this weekend.

While we wrapped up the work week on a beautiful note, those of you getting prepped for the Monument Ave 10K this morning are in for a warm, but damp race.

Temperatures will be near 55 for the departure of the first wave, and closer to 60 by the time the last waves leave the corral. An advancing cold front will be the source for some widespread, intermittent showers this morning.

For the rest of Saturday: Any breaks in the rain in the morning and early afternoon will determine the afternoon high. With some sun, temperatures should have no problem reaching the mid 70s. Some additional sun may lead to some thunderstorms in the afternoon. Biggest worries with these storms will be locally heavy downpours and lightning. Skies clear out behind the front as high pressure builds in from the north, and temperatures drop into the mid 40s overnight.

Sunday: Partly to mostly sunny skies, highs in the mid 70s again. Lows Sunday night dip into the low 50s.

Monday: Continued partly sunny skies, thanks to another weak cold front slips into central Virginia. This one is mostly dry, but I can’t rule out some light rain as it moves through in the morning. Coverage and duration should be limited, however. Highs in the low 70s, lows near 50.

There are some signs of a cooling period coming up beginning at the end of this week and lasting into next week. Highs look to regress closer back to the averages for early April. Current model guidance seems to indicate that the cooldown may be somewhat short-lived. We’ll see how things progress this weekend and next week.
