Weather! Rain Wednesday; clear weekend ahead

A frontal boundary draped across Virginia started bringing rain showers to the region Tuesday night, and that rainfall threat will continue through the daytime hours.

It’s going to be a dreary Wednesday, at least through the morning hours. Rain showers, possibly heavy at times, will occur through the morning and into the early afternoon, before the front moves south enough to clear the region. Mostly cloudy to overcast skies will dominate, and in combination with the rain, temperatures will only make it to about 60 degrees. The cloudiness will start to break up into the overnight hours. Low temperatures will drop into the mid 40s. Total rain accumulation will fall somewhere between 1/2 and 1 inch.

Another, albeit dry, cold front passes through the area on Thursday, with high pressure building in behind it. Partly cloudy skies will lead to highs in the mid 70s, and lows in the low 40s overnight.

In the tropics, an area of disturbed weather located south of Cuba and west of Jamaica is exhibiting some signs of circulation, and is currently given a 70% chance of developing into a tropical cyclone in the next 48 hours. If it reaches tropical storm strength, it will be named Richard.

It looks like high pressure will stay over the area through the weekend, making for yet another gorgeous weekend. The clear skies will create some opportunities for very strong radiational cooling, creating some frost in outlying areas at night. I’ll have a complete update on Friday, including this weekend’s football forecasts.
