Weather! Quiet weekend, some flurries possible; watching early next week for snow.
Friday and this weekend appear to be relatively quiet, with only a few snow flurries possible. Monday evening and Tuesday are going to be the days to watch for our next snow impact.
A light snow has been falling for the past two hours or so now out here near Blacksburg, giving us a couple tenths of an inch of snow on the ground. Nothing significant, but it will be nice to wake up to in the morning.
A surface low scooting across the Carolinas on Friday may bring the chances for some snow flurries or light snow showers, with up to a dusting possible on some grassy areas, if anything at all. Highs will approach 40 this afternoon, before dropping into the mid 20s tonight. Skies will stay mostly cloudy throughout the day as a weak disturbance passes along with the low.
Another weak disturbance passing through on Saturday afternoon may bring another chance for some flurries, but again, no accumulation is expected. Saturday’s highs will stay chilly under continued mostly cloudy skies, with highs only reaching the upper 30s. Overnight lows will be quite chilly, falling to near 20.
High pressure moves a bit closer to the region on Sunday, breaking up some of the clouds. Temperatures won’t warm to match the extra sunshine, though; highs wil again climb into the upper 30s before falling into the mid 20s overnight.
The big focus at this point is the poossibilitiy of some serious snow showers on Monday and Tuesday of next week. Not unlike the Christmas Night system, it’s going to be hard to make an exact call until right before the event. Unlike the last system, however, there’s been some growing model agreement about storm track. It’s still too early to talk about exact amounts however. I want to give the system another day or two to fully develop before making a final call about exactly what we’ll see. There’s not the evidence of the monster storm that was a worry at this point prior to the last system, which is a bit of a relief. Based on timing right now, the period from Monday night until Tuesday afternoon is going to be the one to play closest attention to.
I normally post a Monday forecast by Sunday night; however, based on the timing I’m going to try to have another update up by Sunday at the latest, so you have plenty of time to prepare.
