Weather! Quiet weekend ahead, change not far behind

High pressure is going to be the story of this weekend bringing us partly cloudy to clear skies all weekend long.

High pressure is going to be the story of this weekend bringing us partly cloudy to clear skies all weekend long.

For the rest of Friday, temperatures today have peaked in the mid 50s, and will drop into the mid 30s overnight. Highs Saturday will climb even higher, with highs reaching the mid 60s and overnight lows in the upper 30s. A weak cold front hold highs on Sunday only to the low 60s, though lows overnight will warm into the low 40s.

Monday and Tuesday next week look to be much more of the same, but the models are hinting at a pretty significant shift beginning Wednesday, just in time for the busiest travel day of the year.

Don’t worry – I’m not going to say the s-word. However, a frigid Arctic air mass is coalescing in northern Canada, and by this time next week, there are some pretty strong indicators that most of the eastern half of the US will be awash in this cold air. Given the depth of this airmass, we’ve got a few things to think about. Rain, thunderstorms, and possibly another severe weather outbreak will require attention in advance of the cold front. Behind the cold front, temperatures are going to drop substantially; the highs in the 50s and 60s that we’re seeing now will be the 30s and 40s by next weekend. It’s too early to tell exactly when all these things will come into place, but the early indicators are that we’ll see the rain beginning on Wednesday, and highs in the upper 30s by Friday.

I’m going to keep an eye on this, and I’ll have a better grasp on timing and exactly what to expect on Monday. Until then, enjoy your weekend!
