Weather! Opening Day 2011!
We’ve survived this latest round of thunderstorms, and spring is finally in full swing. Temperatures over the next two days are looking great, and so are conditions for tomorrow night’s home opener for the Richmond Flying Squirrels.
After the several weeks of below-average temperatures prior to Monday’s record high of 87, it seems like spring has finally just arrived. Now that it’s here, though, it’s here in full force.
Temperatures are rebounding quickly today after yesterday’s early-morning thunderstorms. We didn’t drop off, temperature-wise, as much as I expected yesterday; in fact, RIC still recorded a high of 60 degrees. However, in Blacksburg, we never got above 46, and had some localized light rain showers that also included some winter precipitation in the form of graupel and light snow flurries.
Unlike Blacksburg, Richmond has escaped the lengthy tentacles of winter’s grasp for the most part. High pressure over the southeastern states are keeping skies cloud-free this morning, and temperatures will climb in response. Highs Wednesday should reach the mid 60s without much trouble, and without the wind and clouds from yesterday. Lows tonight will drop into the low 40s.
Some cloudiness will return in advance of a stationary front setting up across the Ohio and Mississippi Valleys on Thursday, though we’ll still be on the warm side. Expect highs tomorrow into the mid 70s with a light breeze. Temperatures overnight will continue to be on the cool side, dropping into the mid 40s.
Squirrelcast (7:05pm, vs. New Britain): Hooray, hooray! It’s Opening Day! And the weather is going to be near-perfect. Plan on some scattered clouds and temperatures in the upper 60s to near 70 at first pitch, dropping into the low 60s by the ninth inning. Winds should be negligible through the evening hours. Enjoy the fireworks!
The weekend is looking slightly more unsettled, with some clouds especially on Friday and early Saturday. Temperatures should remain quite warm through the weekend – it’s going to be great for getting outside! I’ll have another update Friday morning.
