Weather! Mild end to the week; pseudo-winter back this weekend
What little snow that remains isn’t going to stick around much longer; temperatures are headed into the 70s(!) on Thursday and Friday. More winter-like (at least for the winter of 2011-12) return by the weekend.
A meteorologist friend of mine, Jamey Singleton of Cable 12 in Rocky Mount, Va., put together this timelapse video of melting snow from Tuesday. It starts out fairly slowly, but really picks up around 0:55.
Most of the snow a little closer to the River City has also melted away, but even if you’ve got some lingering snow pikes, the weather over the next two days will see to it that it’s gone.
The late-winter blowtorch returns to eastern Virginia this week, thanks to a low pressure system hanging out in the Mississippi Valley that is funneling lots of warm air from the Gulf of Mexico into the Mid-Atlantic.
Wednesday night: Temperatures dip into the upper 40s tonight, under increasingly cloudy skies. A weak disturbance is moving through eastern Tennessee this evening, and looks to bring some rain into central Virginia early Thursday morning.
Thursday: Partly cloudy skies continue tomorrow, as temperatures soar into the low 70s! Strong southwesterly flow from the Gulf will be our primary contributor to this, and we’ll generally stay pretty dry otherwise. Lows Thursday night fall into the mid 50s.
Friday: A cold front crossing the Appalachians late Thursday/early Friday begins to move into eastern Virginia during the day. Clouds develop as the front approaches, but this system looks mostly dry. That said, there’s a slight chance for some precipitation as the front passes through, likely Friday afternoon or evening. Some colder air moves in after the front passes, and so while we’ll hit 70 again on Friday, temperatures will drop steadily beginning Friday evening, bottoming out in the upper 30s Saturday morning.
Weekend: Skies clear out again on Saturday, as this looks like a pretty decent final weekend of pseudo-winter (meteorological spring begins March 1st). High temperatures will hover near 50, while lows reach the the low to mid 30s.
