Weather! Heat, humidity, thunderstorm chances for your Father’s Day
The theme for this weekend: hazy, hot, and humid, with a chance of thunderstorms on the side.
What could be a better gift than hazy, hot and humid weather on Father’s Day? It’s not a cheesy necktie, and now you have an excuse to go to the pool!
We’re definitely back in the realm of summer weather. The humidity returned yesterday, and the hot weather is back today, with temperatures topping out at 88 at 2pm. Thunderstorms are developing across the eastern slopes of the Blue Ridge and moving off to the southeast. We’ve got a couple more rounds in store this evening, mostly along and south of I-64. Exactly who gets rain and who doesn’t is still a bit of a crap shoot at this point. Temperatures will stick in the upper 80s for a couple more hours, before dropping into the upper 60s tonight. Continue to look out for the chance of a passing shower or thunderstorm at tonight’s Flying Squirrels game (vs. Bowie, 7:05pm), but those chances should taper off as the sun sets. Temperatures at game-time will be near 80, and drop into the mid 70s by the end of the game.
The heat and humidity will stick around all weekend long, and both Saturday and Sunday will be virtual carbon copies of each other. Expect highs in the lower 90s both days with lows in the lower 70s. Thunderstorm chances will be spotty all weekend; it looks like Saturday evening and night, followed by Sunday afternoon may be some of the best periods for showers and thunderstorms. Go ahead and make those outdoor plans for this weekend, but be ready to abandon them on short notice if a thunderstorm develops nearby.
If your plans for this weekend include the Flying Squirrels, conditions are looking pretty good. Saturday (vs. Bowie, 6:35pm) should see game-time temperatures in the upper 80s at first pitch, dropping to near 80 by the end of the game. Sunday (vs. Bowie, 2:05pm) will be similar, with game-time temps in the upper 80s, climbing into the low 90s as the game progresses. There are chances for a scattered shower or thunderstorm both days, so be prepared.
As we progress into next week, the prognosis looks great for fans of the heat, as high pressure builds in, sending the thermometer up and thunderstorm chances down a bit. I’ll have a complete rundown on Monday.
