Weather! Beach stories, part deux
The bugs are eating me alive, but we’ve finally got some measurable rainfall! The rainfall is heading out, unfortunately, and Richmond takes another shot at highs above the century mark Friday and Saturday.
I shouldn’t complain, but for as much as I love the beach, the mosquitoes seem to love me even more. I swear, I think the buggers have declared my legs to be the island’s best all-you-can-eat buffet. I haven’t itched this much since our vacation on the beach near Cape May as a teenager.
The updated US Drought Monitor will be out Thursday morning, and I think we’ll finally see a brief reduction in the area covered by moderate drought following the rainfall over the last few days. From Sunday through Tuesday, Richmond International picked up 0.47” of rain, bringing us to a total of 1.07” for the month. We still have a significant deficit in the region, but every little bit helps.
A busy frontal system will move through the area over the next two days. It crosses the region from the northwest as a cold front on Thursday, though it will make no measurable dent in the temperatures. Highs Thursday will run into the upper 90s again, though a drier air mass behind the cold front will keep humidity levels down somewhat. A small ridge of high pressure moves in behind the front, keeping rain chances to almost zero for the metro area. Lows Thursday night will fall into the mid 70s.
The front returns through the area on Friday as a warm front, bringing our third round of 100-plus temperatures this year. Highs will climb into the low 100s, as humidity values again stay low. There may be a small chance for a brief thunderstorm or rain shower into the evening on Friday, but those chances should diminish along with the sunlight. Lows Friday only fall into the upper 70s.
Over the weekend, the hot weather will continue. Highs will climb into the low 100s on Saturday. The record for Saturday at RIC is only 99, so this record may fall. The chance for thunderstorms will again appear on Saturday afternoon and evening, with lows dropping into the upper 70s again. A cold snap finally hits on Sunday, as highs may not make it out of the upper 90s. The record high at RIC is 99 for Sunday also, and I wouldn’t be too shocked if we did tie this record. Count on one more chance for storms Sunday afternoon and evening, and overnight temperatures will again fall into the upper 70s.
