RVANews Valentine’s Day Gift Guide

Whether you like it or not, V-Day will be here before you know it, and that means you may have some shopping to do. Don’t go straight for the dozen roses yet; RVANews brings you another helpful gift guide for all you love-birds.

You can almost hear the groans as January turns into February. The weather is frigid, there’s another month of winter ahead and Valentine’s Day is right around the corner.

Whether you like it or not, V-Day will be here before you know it, and that means you may have some shopping to do. Don’t go straight for the dozen roses yet; RVANews brings you another helpful gift guide for all you love-birds.

On the cheap

Just because you’re pinching a few more pennies this year doesn’t mean you can’t still show a little appreciation. Here are some budget-friendly choices for your lovely valentine.

Candy galore: $20

Candy tends to be a safe alternative on Valentine’s Day, but this ain’t your ordinary box of chocolates. For the Love of Chocolate in Carytown offers a whole store stocked to the brim with sugary sweets. From the homemade chocolate truffles to the wall full of Jelly Belly’s you can’t go wrong with a selection of their mouth-watering candy. My personal suggestion: any of the delicious chocolate-covered pretzels. For around $20 you can be sure to satisfy any sweet tooth with a glorious 2 pounds of candy.

A night of dancing: Free!

You’re going to be bouncing off the walls after consuming a whole conversation of candy hearts. Use some of that energy and head over to The Dance Space on West Broad Street. They are offering a romantic night of dancing on Friday February 12 from 8pm to 10:30pm. Admission is free, so grab your partner and show off some of your moves.

Carytown Valentine’s Weekend Raffle: $5 per ticket

More of a gamblin’ man? Sign up today to enter the Carytown Valentine’s Weekend Raffle. For only $5 a ticket, you’re entered in the drawing for an all-inclusive weekend including a night’s stay at a local Bed and Breakfast, a couples massage, a Carytown shopping spree,as well as lunch and dinner at a local restaurant. Tickets can be purchased online at the Carytown website.

Donate blood together: Free!

While it may not be the most fun thing on your V-day list this year, donating blood is free helpful and rewarding. There aren’t too many gifts out there that can do all that, so grab your partner and sign up for a blood donation. Going with someone else will help ease those nerves, and between the two of you, you could save up to 6 lives! Yay! Check out the Virginia Blood Services website to learn more.

Gourmet Cupcakes: $16

Located just off Cary Street, Carytown Cupcakes offers a wide variety of tasty treats. Each week you can find a new set of flavors, along with the classics. My suggestion: do not pass over the Hummingbird cupcake! For Valentine’s Day, they are offering a gift box filled with a dozen mini cupcakes dipped in chocolate and served with candies on top ($29) Or you can create your own box (1/2 dozen for $16)

Priced just right

So, there’s still a little money left from that Christmas bonus? Here are a few moderately priced gifts that are sure to impress your mate.

Night of music: $15 per ticket

If you’re not into the mushy dinner date scene, try checking out a concert for Valentine’s weekend. The National is hosting Corey Smith on Saturday, February 13 at 9pm Known as a modern country musician, Corey Smith boasts laid-back lyrics and fun songs. Most of his shows are sold-out, so grab your tickets while you can and enjoy an evening of live music.

Sushi couples dinner: $45

Even the most die-hard sushi fans would go overboard with this amount of raw fish, so grab another couple and reserve a spot at Carytown Sushi to split their Loveboat Sushi entrée. For $45 you can enjoy 20 pieces of sushi, 10 pieces of sashimi and 3 hand made rolls all served in a giant wooden boat.

Sushi set: $29

In the mood to stay in? Visit the Tokyo Market and get one of your own sushi sets. Order your favorite sushi and set up a dinner for two on your living room floor. Splurge for one of their cute, characterized Sake sets and keep the night going strong. Sake-bombs away!

($45/couple) The class is offered on Saturday, Feb. 13 and will teach you and your partner flowing movements, deep stretching, and rhythmic massage leaving you relaxed and ready for the romantic evening ahead.
