RVAJazzfest Update

This heinous snow storm has taken its toll. After monitoring Delta airlines and @Flack4RIC all day, we’ve found out that Ray Anderson’s flight has been canceled. Additionally, Charlottesville-based Adam Larrabee (leader of the event’s second band) is seeing some of the worst of the storm and is snowed in. We’ve promised that the show will go on regardless of weather, and that it will.

We were really looking forward to seeing Ray Anderson — and before that, Tim Berne — perform with the local musicians whom we have gotten to know so well. But now, more than ever, RVAJazzfest will really be a spotlight on Richmond’s brilliant music scene.

I’ve chosen these bands not because they would just make a good complement to a featured artist (whether Berne or Anderson), but because they’re able to stand on their own as amazing and forward-thinking musicians. So the new last-minute line-up? Not too shabby, if you ask me:

Ombak
Jones+Kuhl [Brian Jones & J.C. Kuhl duo]
Trio of Justice

We hope to see you at The Camel tonight for what should still be an incredible night. Music starts at 9pm sharp.

RVAJazzfest featuring Ombak, Jones+Kuhl, and Trio of Justice takes place on Saturday, February 6, 2010, at 9pm at The Camel, 1621 W Broad St., Richmond VA.

Since none of the out of town artists whose names were used to promote this event will be in attendance, the show is clearly not “going on.” Further, the weather isn’t only keeping advertised artists from attending. I won’t be able to make it either, and I bought tickets in advance. Will refunds be made available?

geez george, cut these guys some slack. they are some incredibly pro-active, music loving and forward thinking young men who have gone through a lot to put on this event, and thats before one A list nyc headliner canceled last second, they secured another and then the worst snow storm in quite some time decided to crash their event as well. they make your city a better place, be thankful and stop calling ticky tack fouls.

  3. Anyone who purchased tickets to jazz fest please email me directly about your refund for the show.

We thank you for your interest, support and patronage and hope to see you soon here at The Camel.

Thanks in advance, we wish you could have made it.

We bought several tickets and couldn’t make it. But we feel this event is an important part of the Richmond Jazz scene and would never think of requesting a refund. Long live JAZZ in Richmond!! Keep up the great work.

  5. Was there ever a point when y’all thought to reschedule? Seriously tough luck this week. Anyone slightly superstitious might have called a time out, to extend mattwhite’s metaphor.

I hate that things didn’t work out. I would have loved to have been there for a)Tim Berne, b)Ray Anderson, c)Adam Larrabee, but d)”Winter Powerhouse” kept me from driving south.

  6. The show turned out great!

If you look at the event in Star Wars terms: This was RVAJazz’s Empire, and after the gig, Bryan Hooten got a call from Tim Berne revealing that he is Hooten’s father, and next year they will fight to the death while John Zorn tries to destroy Hooten with electricity from his hands.

  7. Word on the streets Lancer was there with gear? I’ve got the cash equivalent of admission for two right here for the opportunity to hear the recordings!

Ps extremely generous offer Rand. Good on you!

i trudged through the snow to be there and could only stay for the first two bands but i kind of loved that RVAjazzfest was an RVA event. there were no musicians from out of town, just amazing richmonders playing amazing richmond music in a (not-so-amazing) snow storm.

sure it would have been great to see some big out-of-town headliner, but i think that it was not even remotely necessary and just further proved that we have enough talented, capable musicians here to go around. i hadn’t heard jones + kuhl in quite a while and they were cookin! something important is happening right here, right now and i think richmond’s contributions to current experimental music are still being taken for granted by a lot of richmonders.

obviously they thought of rescheduling. obviously. but the show was packed full of eager listeners and the music was still way better than i expected without any out of town “big names.”
