Tips for taking advantage of post-Christmas sales, a few New Year’s specials, coupons benefiting Special Olympics, and (of course) our picks for the best deals around town this week.

As the holiday season wraps up, I think most folks are sick of shopping and don’t want to hear me say this… but it’s time to start stalking post-Christmas sales in the grocery store general merchandise section.

The Kroger I visited on Monday already had everything except candy marked 50% off – Lights, ornaments, decorations, housewares, and some toys. At least some of those items will probably make it to 75% off in the upcoming weeks, and that’s the time to pounce on everything you need for next Christmas, as well as bargains on products that aren’t exclusively Christmas-related.

THEN you can rest, and look forward to doing less shopping next December!

Food freebie: On Friday 1/1, stop by Whole Foods Short Pump for a free cup of Allegro coffee.

Meat Top Pick

Whole boneless pork loins $1.88/lb at Ukrop’s; half boneless pork loin $1.88/lb at Kroger.

Veggie Top Pick

Dole blend salads $1.99 at Ukrop’s.

Fruit Top Pick

8-lb bag of Texas Red Grapefruit $4.88 at Ukrop’s.

Dairy Top Pick

$1.88 Dannon yogurt at Kroger, and there was a $1 coupon in the 12/16 SmartSource insert.

Staples Top Pick

Mueller’s pasta is $.99 a box at Ukrop’s

Freschetta frozen pizza $3.99 at Kroger. Sign up for $1 printable coupon here.

Beverage Top Pick

A few New Year’s Eve sales: Today only at Whole Foods, Martinelli’s organic sparkling cider is “Buy One, Get One Free,” and all week, 1L Food Club mixers and tonics are $.33 at Ukrop’s.

Household Top Pick

This week and next, Kroger’s running a Proctor & Gamble promo of “Buy $25 in participating items, save $5 at checkout.” Products include Dawn (10.1-24oz $2), Bounty paper towels (8 regular rolls $7), Tide (40-64 load liquid $11), Charmin ($10 for 9 mega rolls), Pantene ($3.33), and Iams pet food ($13 cat, $16 dog.

Last Sunday’s Proctor & Gamble coupon insert included savings on many of these items, not to mention $.03 donated to Special Olympics for every coupon redeemed. Tide Stain Release only costs $2 for an 18-pack after the $3 off coupon. And finally, through December 31, you can also redeem loaded P&G eSAVER coupons for many of the products. (Sadly the eSAVER/Kroger relationship is being terminated at the end of this year).

Just wondering why you never mention Food Lion. IMHO, the quality is just as good as Kroger and much more reasonable.

In my experience, FL is the MOST expensive of the big 3.

  3. Bob M. on said:

Wait, what? FL is more expensive than Ukrop’s and Kroger??? Surely you jest.

  4. MidloMama on said:

I jest not. Plus I’ve never forgiven FL for the whole meat scandal. If people boycott Ukrop’s because of frickin’ Howard Stern, I think bleaching meat is a perfectly reasonable reason to boycott FL.

Sidebar: a friend was in Culpeper and brought home a Martin’s ad for me (I am THAT much of a geek) and on their front page is All-Natural Pork Loin at $1.49/lb., but Dole Salad was more expensive than Ukrop’s at 2/$5. Like I’ve said before, you need to compare the price for the whole basket, not just a few cherry-picked examples.
