Check out this week’s top picks for meat, produce, staples, and more. And while you’re at it, share your tips for shopping local farmer’s markets!
As summer winds down and growing season culminates, my fruit and veggie top picks this week are to shop a local farmer’s market! Richmond is blessed with a diverse array of options that have multiplied rapidly in recent years. To find hours and location of a market near you, check out LocalHarvest.org.
I’ll admit, I’m a total newbie at farmer’s market shopping so I don’t have any groundbreaking tips for getting great deals. (Feel free to weigh in, experts.) As with most bargain shopping, shop early for best selection or late for better deals. And of course, focus on what’s in season.
(The 10 item Mega Event Sale continues at Kroger this week – $5 off for purchasing 10 participating items.)
Meat Top Pick
Due to a sudden craving for smoked sausage, I’m going with $2.88 16-oz Johnsonville at Ukrop’s this week.
Veggie Top Pick
Farmer’s Market! (But also $1 organic grape tomato pints at Whole Foods)
Fruit Top Pick
Farmer’s Market!
Dairy Top Pick
Milk half-gallons are $1.50 at Kroger, although it’s still a better deal to buy gallons at regular price if you’ll use it all before expiration.
Staples Top Pick
With Mega Sale discount, Old El Paso tacos and tortillas are $.99 at Kroger. Load a “$.60 off 2” e-coupon from Shortcuts.com to make them even cheaper.
Snacks & Sweets Top Pick
Nature Valley or Fiber One granola bars work out to $1.99 with Kroger Mega Sale discount, plus use a $.40 e-coupon from Shortcuts.com.
Beverages Top Pick
SoBe Juice or Life Water can be had for $.49 apiece at Kroger, when purchased as part of the Mega Sale.
Household Top Pick
$5.48 Cottonelle 12-roll packs at Kroger, and be sure to use doubled $.50 manufacturer coupons if you have them, and/or load $.25 e-coupons at Shortcuts.com or Cellfire.
