Roosevelt’s chef gets national praise, Burger Bach heads west, and an update on Pearl Raw Bar

One RVA’s best chefs has been nominated for a prominent award, one of the best burger joints is looking to expand, and get ready to welcome another brewery to town.

The Virginia Wine Expo has officially kicked off, and boy does it have some fun events planned throughout the weekend. Whether you want to taste, learn, or buy wine, this is your event. There’ll be 60 wineries at the Richmond Convention Center, with nearby venues also hosting events centered around Virginia wine. Tickets are available for walk-around tastings, educational events, wine dinners, food pairings, and more. Visit their site to learn more about which events to partake in and to purchase your tickets!

According to Richmond Bizsense, Burger Bach is looking to open a second location. The New Zealand-style gastropub has its eyes on the West Broad Village out at Short Pump. Owner Mike Ripp says that area has all the dynamics he is looking for: “It’s got the new ACAC, Whole Foods, and the Children’s Museum, which has thousands of visitors. It has, in my mind, the best neighborhood feel of anywhere in the West End.” If everything goes according to plan, Short Pump residents could be dining on the best burgers and fries sometime in July.

In other opening news, we all have our eyes and ears on Pearl Raw Bar in the former deLux space at the corner of Main and Strawberry in the Fan. In an email to RVANews, Michelle Williams says, “It looks like we will be open to the public the first of next week.” We’ll keep you posted.

Also according to Richmond Bizsense, we are adding another member to our local brewery family. Strangeways Brewing is in the process of getting up and running at 2277 Dabney Road, just off of Staples Mill near the Willow Lawn area. Owner Neil Burton is the man behind the venture, and has been very active in our beer community for some time now.

Our hats are off to Chef Lee Gregory, head chef of The Roosevelt, who has been named a James Beard Award nominee (pdf) for Best Chef in the Mid-Atlantic category. He’s one of 20 nominees in that category, which spans from New Jersey to Virginia. The James Beard Awards are the Oscars of the food world, and it’s an extremely high honor to be nominated. Well deserved, Lee! We are so proud you call RVA your home! Reservations to The Roosevelt can be made by calling 804.658.1935.

Lee’s creative cuisine is amazing. Many times I’ve enjoyed dishes with ingredients married to pure flavor perfection.
