Richmond Public Schools calendar update

The Richmond City School Board makes some adjustments to the RPS calendar.

In response to the loss of eight instructional days due to snow and crazy-cold weather, the Richmond School Board recently approved a change to the 2013-2014 instructional calendar.

Thursday, March 6th and Friday, March 7th are now full, regular school days.

The press release from RPS quotes Chief Academic Officer, Victoria Oakley, as saying:

Although our school calendar contains 90 more instructional hours than the minimum state requirement, we have missed significant instructional time during crucial periods. Moreover, we still face the possibility of even more weather-related challenges. Each day out of school is a lost opportunity to provide much needed teaching and learning for our students. It is very important that we maintain continuity of instruction…The additional hours during March 6[th] and 7[th] will help us to do so.

Originally, these days were scheduled as early dismissal days to allow time for parent-teacher conferences. School officials are currently looking at alternative parent/teacher conference options and will announce those soon. So keep an eye out–we’ll let you know as soon as we do.
