Restaurant Week menus, Dixie Donuts rolls into Carytown, and Burger Bach brings a happy hour
A donut shop inspired by a Philadelphia staple is heading to Carytown, a seafood restaurant that’s been a Richmond staple is closing down, and we have each and every menu for the upcoming Restaurant Week. All this, plus more in our weekly recap of the city’s food news.
Restaurant Week is next week! Now in its 11th year, the week long event highlights some of Richmond’s best restaurants, all while benefiting Feedmore, an organization that provides hunger relief in Central Virginia. Restaurants create a three course prix fixe menu at $25.12, with $2.12 of that bill going to Feedmore. If you haven’t already, you can peruse through all 39 participating restaurant menus here. From there, you need to call and make a reservation (where applicable) because these places fill up fast. Dining out for a good cause, who doesn’t love that?
Restaurant Week originally had 40 restaurants until the news broke last week that Stronghill is now closed, bringing the count down to 39. Owner Jessica Simmons, who also owns River City Tattoo, is attempting to sell either the concept or just the space. The restaurant was open for four years at 1200 North Boulevard.
For over 60 years, Richmonders saw the Byram’s Seafood sign in all its neon goodness at 3215 West Broad Street. Then in February, Tower Fish Company took over the Richmond landmark. Now, just two months later, the restaurant is for sale for $115,000. So, if you are in the market for purchasing a restaurant, we’ve got a Broad Street and a Boulevard space available for the taking, RVA!
In restaurant opening news, the recently closed Cafe Ole space in Carytown will turn into a donut shop called Dixie Donuts. According to Richmond Magazine, Betsy Harrell Thomas wasn’t sure what to do when she closed Cafe Ole across from the Byrd Theatre. However, after a recent trip with partner J. Frank (who is the former executive chef of The Dining Room at the Berkeley) to Federal Donuts in Philadelphia, the pair had their answer. They hope to open Dixie Donuts in May and already have a laundry list of cake, not yeast-raised, based donut flavors.
Happy Hour alert! Burger Bach, at 10 South Thompson Street, in the former Ellwoods Cafe spot, is offering half-off oysters, mussels, and shrimp everyday from 4pm to 6pm. If you haven’t had their burgers yet, you are missing out BIG TIME. And please don’t even get us started on their perfect french fries.

I’m not a big oysters or mussels guy but the spicy shrimp at Burger Bach is an excellent appetizer. I definitely think Burger Bach is in the running for best burger in RVA.
Placed a take-out order past Monday night. Very disappointed. Soggy fries and mediocre burgers – original & basics. Meat tasty. I would forget about little salad and include fries instead. Proximity will have us return, but would try something else. Perhaps mussels?
Do we know which brand/roaster of coffee Dixie Donuts will be serving (Rostov’s, Black Hand, etc)? I could see the draw of Dixie being as much for coffee as it may be for donuts. Capitol Coffee and Coffee and Cartwheels are close by, but more coffee in the area is not a bad thing :)
