Real Richmond: “Navigating the culture and cuisine of Richmond, VA”

A series of restaurant walking tours are popping up around town, offered by REAL RICHMOND, an LLC made up of two writers from Richmond Magazine who want to showcase the culture and cuisine of the River City. They’re offering 2.5 hour food tours in specific Richmond neighborhoods. This Saturday, January 22, 2011’s tour of the Carytown and Museum district is already sold out. Dubbed “Butchers, Bakers, & Beyond,” the tour starts at Chop Suey Books and visits places like Amuse at the VMFA, Carytown Cupcakes, and Belmont Butchery. The event is rain or shine, and will cost you $39. You get special tastings from owners and chefs and leisurely strolls and lessons on historic locations, along with current information on the area.

It’s a good sign, I think, that even in this bleak weather Richmonders–who famously like to complain about the weather — have snatched up all of the tickets for January’s tours.

The next tour is Saturday February 26 at 2pm. Entitled “Shockoe Slip: Capital of Cuisine,” visitors will learn the history of the area as an international trading post and sample cuisine from multiple countries at stops like Bistro Bobette and La Grotta.

March features Monroe and Jackson Wards. Call 804-840-5318 for more information and visit realrichmondva.com for tickets. You’ll see me there when it gets a little warmer.

  1. Thanks so much for the shout-out! Tickets are available for our Feb. 19th tour, VCU/Fan: Alternative Eats, too. And we will have tours most Saturdays forever and ever! FYI, Real Richmond isn’t affiliated with Richmond Magazine.

  2. Actually, the Feb. 26th tour is Carytown/Museuem District. It is always the 4th Saturday of every month. Feb. 12th (sold out) is Shockoe Slip–to be repeated March 12th.
