A glimpse into the mind of a our big, ridiculous, wonderful, and newly-five-year-old boy…
Our son JR turned five on Sunday. I know. I know. I am now the mother of a five-year-old. Whiskey-tango-foxtrot, guys.
Although we decided to keep things pretty low-key this year, celebration-wise,1 I feel the need to do something to commemorate this milestone in our kid’s life. I mean, it feels like a pretty big deal. Five. No longer a baby, definitely a kid, this close to a full-fledged dude.
We’ve always gotten a kick out of documenting JR’s thoughts about the world around him (as seen here, here, and here), but I thought his birthday would be a good time to give him the chance to share a few thoughts about, well, him.

I’m five.
3. How tall are you?
Twenty-seven feet.3
4. What’s your favorite color?
Red. And blue. And also golden.4
5. What’s your favorite thing to eat?
Gummy bears.

7. What’s your favorite song?
Down by the bayyyyyyy where the watermelons grrrrrr-owwwwwwww…

9. What’s your favorite movie?
10. What’s your favorite animal?
Turtles, because they swim fast. Wait. No, a cheetah.
11. What do you like best: winter, spring, summer, or fall?
Winter because of snow.
12. What’s your favorite thing to do inside?
Look at my weapons.8
13. What’s your favorite thing to do outside?
Play soccer.
14. What’s your favorite place to visit?
Target.
15. If you could go on vacation anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I would go to the beach because I like it there. I like to make sand castles.
16. What’s your favorite thing to do with Daddy?
Play with LEGO.

Play Candyland.9

We play family. She’s the mom, and I’m the dad. And we’re also secret ninjas sometimes–when she’s says it’s OK.

If they’re nice.

If they’re mean.
22. What makes you feel happy?
When I look at Ninja Turtles.
23. What makes you feel sad?
When I don’t look at Ninja Turtles.

You.

When you take away my toys.
26. What makes you feel scared?
Zombies.
27. What do you want to be when you grow up?
A ninja. Or I just want to play video games.
28. Do you think you’ll get married when you grow up?
Yes, I’m marrying Raynie.11
29. Do you think you’ll have kids? How many?
Will they touch my toys? If they’ll touch my toys, then not any.
30. Where do you want to live when you grow up?
In the cafeteria at my school.
31. What do you think is the best part of being a grown up?
Being married.
32. What do you want to learn how to do this year?
I want to learn how to jump as high as you.
33. What was the most fun thing or best thing that happened this year?
My birthday!

What we’re doing right now.

A Bob the Builder toy. And some meat. Chicken meat!
