New Open Enrollment timeline for Richmond Public Schools

RPS bumps up the Open Enrollment window..by a heck of a lot. Take note, parents!

While Richmond Public Schools usually holds Open Enrollment in January and/or February, the powers-that-be have decided to shift the process up a few months in preparation for next year.

The Open Enrollment application window for the 2016 – 2017 school year is now from Monday, September 28th through Friday, October 9th (at 4:30 PM, to be exact).

(I know, I know: the 2015-2016 school year literally starts THIS WEEK, but props to RPS for their proactive approach in getting the ball rolling on what can be a very stressful process for Richmond City parents and students.)

For those not familiar with Open Enrollment, here’s The Deal:

During RPS’s Open Enrollment period, Richmond City residents who wish to send their children to an “out-of-zone” school (i.e. not the one in their neighborhood) can apply for spots in their desired school.

No official word yet from Richmond Public Schools on how the timeline will shake out once applications are in, but they will host two informational meetings next week “to inform the public of the process enhancements,” so says the release on the RPS website:

  • Wednesday, September 16th
  • 6:00 – 7:00 PM
  • Huguenot High School, 7945 Forest Hill Avenue
  • Thursday, September 17th
  • 6:00 – 7:00 PM
  • Thomas Jefferson High School, 4100 W. Grace Street

Once Open Enrollment begins, parents can submit applications online, by mail, or in person at the Office of Pupil Personnel Services, located on 13th floor of City Hall (301 N. 9th Street).
