Three new long-awaited retailers are opening or have opened this week in the Short Pump area. Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI), hhgregg and Jake and Friends are all new on the Far West End retail scene, and there are plenty of grand opening deals to be had across the board.

The new REI at West Broad Village, across from Home Goods, is offering all sorts of goodies for its opening weekend, beginning Friday at 9:00 a.m. The first 200 people in the door each day will receive limited edition water bottles filled with gift cards in values from $5 to $100, complimentary breakfast provided an hour before opening, raffles and backpacking trip giveaways. Doors open at 9:00 a.m. Friday and Saturday and 10:00 a.m. Sunday.

Jake and Friends, a retailer of Life Is Good apparel, opened in the Short Pump Station shopping center near Trader Joe’s on Thursday. Carrying all things Jake (the signature stick figure appearing on all Life Is Good gear), the store has a huge following. It’s the first retail store for the company in the Richmond market. Look for a story profiling store owner Nancy Sharigian on Downtown Short Pump next week.

Electronics retailer hhgregg started its grand opening celebration Thursday. The store held a soft opening last Thursday, but went all out with balloons, flags, a huge sale and a live radio station broadcast to kick off the weekend. The store was completely filled during our visit around 6:00 p.m. with a checkout line snaking throughout.
