Nearly 100 Henrico roads, intersections closed following strong storms Thursday evening

We’ll keep this post updated with the latest information from County of Henrico officials as it becomes available.

Nearly 100 roads and intersections are closed throughout Henrico County following strong storms that blew through the area Thursday evening. The severe storms brought high winds that toppled trees and power lines and caused almost 170,000 Dominion customers to lose power at the height of the storm–roughly one third of the company’s Central Virginia customers.

As of 11:00 AM, Henrico Police have the following updates to share regarding infrastructure, roadways, and cleanup progress:

  • Trash pickup: Henrico County’s curbside trash collection is operating on a normal schedule today. The Springfield Road and Charles City Road public use areas are open and operating on their regular schedules.
  • Recreation & Parks facilities: Confederate Hills Recreation Center and Meadow Farm Museum are closed due to power outages.
  • Henrico County Public Library facilities: Gayton Branch, North Park Branch, Tuckahoe Area, Twin Hickory area and Libbie Mill libraries are closed due to power outages. However, Glen Allen Branch, Sandston Branch, Fairfield Area and Varina Area libraries have power and are open. For more information, please call Varina Area Library at 804.501.1980; phones lines are not working at other libraries.

Police encourage citizens to check the “Storm Recovery in Progress” link at www.henrico.us for updated information.

The county notes that while crews are attending to these as quickly as possible, they are unable to provide a time when any intersection or roadway will be open. Please be mindful of teams from Henrico Fire, Police, Public Works, as well as Dominion and VDOT, who are working the clear downed trees and downed power lines.

As a reminder, intersections with malfunctioning or non-working lights should be treated as a four way stop.  Any downed lines should be considered live.

Citizens that would like to report trees or other debris in the roadway should call 804.501.4393. To report power outages, call Dominion at 866.366.4357.
