Mad Men and speakeasies at Julep’s

I love a good theme party, and Julep’s is making a strong showing this month with a Mad Men-themed cocktail gathering. Guests will dress in the style of the show and enjoy a generous spread of 1960’s foods like Baked Alaska and deviled eggs, along with old-fashioned cocktails. $10 gets you in.

The event is to celebrate Julep’s 7th anniversary this month.

“We wanted to do something a little more personal, get our regulars involved. After we invited them, we started asking friends to bring some people in who might become regulars,” says Bobby Kruger, who runs the beverage program and does all marketing and promotions.

There’s a catch, though: the party is invite-only with mailed paper applications, and it’s too late to get in. But don’t worry — Julep’s plans to do a themed party like this every month. April’s Earth Day event was done with all locally sourced and organic food, but was a more informal, open invite.

Kruger says the reason they started these events was to let people know that “Julep’s is a little more approachable than just fine dining.” This month, because it is a private party, smoking will be allowed (a big drawback for me, and I hope they won’t all be that way).

If you’d like to know about future themed events, email julepsnsc@verizon.net, become a fan on Facebook, or call Julep’s and ask for Kruger.

Julep’s has been doing other cool things, like the recent addition of The Mint, their secret, after-hours, call-the-right-number-and-you’ll-be-let-in-speakeasy. On Fridays and Saturdays, Julep’s closes after dinner service (10pm), and then according to Kruger, they “lock the door, drop the blinds, dim the lights, and change the music.” Attendees enjoy “slightly more extravagant cocktails” and last call is at 1:40 am. Hint: look for the black door with the mint leaf. “The door only opens from the inside, “ notes Kruger, so you have to call the magic number to make a reservation, and then call to be let in. (psst, the number is 804-651-8621).

I know where I’ll be next weekend.

That’s a cool idea and I love the show. However, what is the point of this article? Seem like a Juleps promo, unfortunately disguised as a cool public event I would want to check out.

    “$10 gets you in.”
    No it doesn’t.
