Steven Effinger adoption boys

Not for the feelings-averse

At nearly 60, Steven Effinger adopted two teenage brothers and changed three lives in the process. His story his a pretty inspiring one, is a great way to make you think harder about National Adoption Awareness Month.

Maybe stay in and make pancakes?

America’s Friendliest Marathon will run in a friendly manner all around town on Saturday morning. Please view the road closures and adjust your plans accordingly. If all goes well, maybe we’ll be up for World’s Friendliest Marathon–we’re coming for you, Scandinavia! Also, don’t forget that Kathrine Switzer is speaking tonight at the JCC!

Lewis Hine, Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans, Margaret Bourke-White, and a bunch of unfortunate kids

Get a glimpse into the wild, wild past of limited to nonexistent child labor laws with the photography of Lewis Hine and his peers at the VMFA’s Likeness of Labor exhibit. Ugh, adults are the worst.

Hardywood clones itself! Gingerbread stout for all!

Trevor Dickerson got some good pics of Hardywood’s new Goochland County brewing facility, which broke ground today. Also included are the renderings of what the new brewing space will look like. Raise a glass and toast the fact that we probably won’t have to drive all the way out to the Gooch for our fun events–they’ll still be doing their thing on Ownby Lane.

Turkish Knot (1)

Cover that dome, yo

Ignatius Hats is this week’s featured Handmade Holiday maker, and we are agog and aghast at the frigging hats these dudes make! Seriously, being a specialist has gotta feel rewarding. Learn more about how one gets into the hat biz, why it’s such a freeing form of art, and why you probably need to have one or two custom numbers.

If we were rich people

We would mess with this company every day by staging elaborate breakup scenarios.
