Sarvay and Smartt put up a good fight last week, but in the end Scott Pharr was victorious in our first installment of Garden Wars. Let’s see who will take the crown this week…

For those of you just getting in to Garden Wars, here’s the deal…

John Sarvay (of Floricane and Buttermilk & Molasses), Ryan Smartt (of ConnectRichmond), and Scott Pharr (of PharrOut and RVANews) face off each week as they showcase images of their beloved gardens, complete with clever captions. Then you, the readers, vote to decide who wins. Whoever has won the most number of weeks out of the three-month run of this series will be treated to a meal by the losers. Easy-peasy. And quite, quite fun.

Current standings are:

Sarvay: 0
Pharr: 1
Smartt: 0

Garden Wars (week 2) commence with the gardening/battling!

Sarvay

A girl and her first crop of spring peas are soon parted – after eating half of what we picked, Thea ate half of what we shelled. Raw food, all the way for our girl.

What’s cuter than a toddler with peas? Her mom, harvesting her favorite root vegetable and celebrating her fifth year of marriage to Farmer John. (And celebrating the fact that she weeded the garden twice this spring, ensuring Garden Wars could take place.)

This week’s harvest included our first batch of peas, reams of kale and chard, a few small beets and some of the infamous Scott Pharr finger carrots.

Pharr

Yes, those are my peas and yes, they are abundantly and deliciously sweet. Someone else that’s abundantly sweet (besides me) is my youngest, Kyla.

Why wouldn’t I include a how-to on hand pollination? Here you see (from left to right) female flower, male flower, and the fruit they produce. And yes, you put one to the other and VOILA!

The harvest includes the last of my finger carrots as well as dipping into my last batch of lettuce yet starting the pea, squash, and zucchini season! (Even if you have to hand pollinate.)

Smartt

My secret weapon this week = Lyla giving the tomato plants giant hugs every day.

¡Ay, caramba! Caliente… Mexcelente!

Peppers and herb: reunited and it tastes so good.

Ok, readers, cast your vote in the comments. WHOSE GREENS REIGN SUPREME?!?!?!

Sarvay for this one…I appreciate anyone who eats half the harvest right then and there!

  2. I almost threw a vote to Pharr this week, but I admire a man who goes off the reservation with early spring hot pepper harvests. My vote goes to Ryan Smartt!

  3. I vote Pharr. THE ABUNDANCE OF VEG!!!! Also, Kyla’s little belly is killing me with the cute.

  4. Scott Pharr on said:

Wow Ryan, I am also impressed by your peppers. I have to vote Smartt this time.

BTW, Do I have to stutter when I say your last name?

  5. Andrea C on said:

wow…the pun was so spectacular, i too have to go with Smartt. plus, peppers! Hello!

  6. Ryan Smartt on said:

Thanks for the love, Scott Pharr. However, since you won last week and I guess I can’t vote for myself, my support goes to Sarvay this time.

  7. Jennie on said:

I too appreciate Ryan’s peppers.. Looks yummy! I vote Smartt!

  8. Oh, man, tie between Sarvay for playing the wife/anniversary card and Pharr for the pollination tutorial. Can I give a half-point to each?

  9. I vote Sarvay this week for the very artful picture of Thea and the Peas.

  10. I vote Pharr. The man hand pollinated stuff, for the love of Stonewall! If that’s not dedication to his garden then I don’t know what is.

  11. Noel on said:

Smartt get’s my vote, we have peppers, multilingual peppers and Hugs, cute little Lyla hugs! And look at those tomatoes…maestoso!

This week is tough!! I’m going with Sarvay on this one. Who doesn’t love beets!!! I think Pharr got a little desperate on this one. Week 2 is just to soon for the kid in the diaper shot!!! Too soon man too soon!!!

  14. Eric, Unfortunately that’s what she looks like all summer long!

  15. Team Sarvay gets my vote this week. Thea and the peas!

I vote Ry Smartttt. Look at those peppers! That gives a little competition to Texas peppers! Must be the angel hugs from Angelita Lyla.

  17. Elizabeth Smartt on said:

Although I am a big fan of my husband, I think this is a three-way tie. Those are three of the cutest little kids I’ve ever seen! Oh, and the produce looks good too. But come on…is this really about gardens?? I think it’s about the cute kids we’ve cultivated from seedlings into sweet peas. (Aw!)

  18. Willard on said:

As someone trying to grow peppers for the 1st time (indoors too!), I vote for Smartt. Well done, and the photos of the kids are all adorable, you guys must feed them lots of kelp and bonemeal.

  19. I’m going with Pharr this week. That harvest is super impressive and Kyla, I mean those baby curls and that belly!!!

  20. gray on said:

A toss between Pharr’s visual and written description of hand pollination and Smartt’s image of the light green pepper and gorgeous garden dirt….

I’ll vote for Pharr this week.

  21. Shannon on said:

Altho Kyla is way cute, I gotta go with the peppers and herb caption, that was hysterical! oh ya, and I have a ton of peppers already, so that helps with the vote lol

    Best baby picture – Sarvay

    Overall Pharr

nobody wins in a KO this week. Pharr in a controversial split decision.

  23. I vote for Lyla! Smartt girl!

My vote still goes with Smartt. If everyone gave more “hugs”…even to plants…the whole world would be a better place. Grow, baby, grow!

  32. Definitely a 3-way tie when it comes to ridiculously adorable little girls. Props to Smartt for the Peppers & Herb pun. A nod to Sarvay for the shout-out to Nikole. But I’ve gotta give top honors to Pharr for kicking it up a notch with hand-pollination. (Is that even legal in Virginia?)

  33. Bill 3 on said:

My vote goes to Smartt this week. The hot pepper and cool daughter are a winning combination:):)
