French-inspired bakery running crowdfunding campaign to open Scott’s Addition location

Jay Metzler hopes to open Idle Hands Bread Company in Scott’s Addition with the help of the community.

From the Kickstarter:

Hello old friends, new friends and fellow bread lovers!

ABOUT THIS PROJECT Idle Hands Bread is my passion project. I bake for friends, family, neighbors, special events and just for the sheer love of it. With your help I’m excited to take the next step from personal passion – to passionate bakery owner.

A little about myself – I’m Jay, a native Richmonder, and an artisanal baker. I eat, sleep and dream bread. Constantly crafting recipes for delicious, hearty, nutritious, naturally leavened breads and pastries. I am currently 1/3rd owner of a coffee shop in Bon Air Virginia called Perk! I bake the bread daily for the shop and our lunch menu. from time to time i experiment with croissant and pastry. It became clear pretty quickly that the baking at the shop would outgrow the space and that was when I decided to launch this project!

MY PHILOSOPHY I believe in the art of making bread that’s good for the body and the heart. Natural ingredients and time-tested technique for simply-made breads that are anything but. I am committed to using simple, natural ingredients, and no chemical or commercial leavening agents.  My breads are handmade with care and attention for expert quality and taste.

WHAT’S NEXT I’d love to bring my crafted breads and pastries to more homes and restaurants in the Richmond area. Specifically, I’m working towards opening a french inspired bakery in the Scott’s Addition neighborhood. And to start, I need your help with that all-important first step…purchasing a commercial convection oven.

Join me in helping to raise the funds to raise the bread!

At press time, Metzler had raised $1,250 of the needed $5,500 with 27 days left in the Kickstarter campaign.

  1. Any experience baking gluten-free breads? I know a lot of people that are either allergic or intolerant of gluten….
