Fourth of July events
I mean, you could just stay in and binge on potato chips and baseball (not a bad idea, come to think of it…), but wouldn’t you rather get out and DO something to celebrate our nation’s birthday? We turn 235 years old, and there are plenty of ways to paint Richmond red, white, and blue.
Ah. It’s that time of year. No, not Christmas, you dolt! Independence Day. You know, that movie with the aliens and Will Smith and the speech by President Bill Paxton about how humanity needs to man up and get er’ done. Wait…oh, you mean that Independence Day. Whoops! My bad, dawg. It’s the one we celebrate our ancestors for being insurgents against the evil British occupiers. You know, the good old days (minus the whole slavery thing, denial of womens’ rights, and no central air). Back when America was the underdog. Whether you plan to avoid lighting fireworks because your hands blew off last 4th of July or you just want to celebrate living in a wicked cool country the way this guy does, there is a superfluity of events to stoke the patriotic fire in your heart both on and around July 4.
2nd Annual Parham Road Independence Day Parade & Festival
A community parade and festival featuring inflatables, interactive games, and give aways. Jon Burkett, WTVR6, will be the parade grand marshal. Nutzy and Zinger from the Flying Squirrels will also be in the parade. Many personalities will be available for meet/greet/autographs at the festival. VCU coach Shaka Smart autographed basketballs, theme gift baskets, and David Baldacci autographed books are just a few of the auction items available in a silent auction.

Old-Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration
Enjoy an old-fashioned Fourth of July celebration at the Meadow Farm Museum. Enjoy activities for the whole family from arts and crafts, face painting and a petting zoo, to sky amazing diving shows, juggling, a performance by a historic color guard, and a musket salute. There will be live music that ranges from southern rock to bluegrass and tours of the museum will be made available.

Richmond Flying Squirrels
Head to the Diamond to watch the Flying Squirrels take on the Trenton Thunder in a local favorite. One of the city’s best Independence Day fireworks shows will follow the game.

Powhatan Independence Day Celebration & Fireworks
Join the The Huguenot Fire Department for fireworks, live music, kids’ activities, bounce house, food, mechanical bull, classic car and fire engine show, and a host of other activities.

- $20 per car load; $15 per car load with donation for the food pantry
Chesterfield County July 4th Celebration
Enjoy food, fun, and free Fourth of July fireworks. There will be live music, and children can play in the special children’s play area. The Kings of Swing will perform, and children can play in the special children’s play area.

Berkeley Plantation Wreath Laying Ceremony
This is an annual commemoration honoring Benjamin Harrison V, one of seven Virginia signers of the Declaration of Independence and 18th century owner of Berkeley Plantation. Enjoy walks in the restored boxwood and flower gardens, breathtaking vistas of the James River, guided tours of the 1726 manor house and a formal living history program with the Daughters of the American Revolution.

The traffic control at the Chesterfield Fairgrounds at the 4th of July 2012 was horrible. I have see traffic ten time the size be handled much smoother. Horrible tie-ups by obviously untrained personnel. If the county paid an engineer to coordinate that they blew their money. If Chesterfield authorities are accountable…shame on you.
I will be going back to Fort Lee next year…more people more fireworks and much better traffic control. CC you need a model, call Ft. Lee and get advice.
