Food news: Urban Farmhouse 3.0, happy hours & fall menus, and a new BBQ spot

More food news than you can shake a broccolini at!

Urban Farmhouse, which is just about the most popular spot to grab breakfast down in the Bottom, is expanding to a third location–this one in Church Hill. Back in April, City Council passed Ordinance No. 2013-75 allowing for commercial uses in the old Chimborazo School building, which houses the Lava Lofts. Commercial uses like…a sweet cafe! The newest Urban Farmhouse (they opened a second location in Chesterfield last year) hopes to open up shop in December.

The Continental Westhampton, which is one of my favorite spots to grab a meal with my wiggly 5-year-old son, has extended their happy hour. The new happy hour is now eight hours, which is basically an entire work day. It includes $4 drafts and $2 Yuenglings. If ever there was a reason to telecommute…

PS. The Continental also has a sweet canned beer special on Sundays: just $3 with some legit and local options.

The fine folks at Rappahannock (whom I always refer to as “hometown heroes” in my head) have announced their fall menu, which is primed to blow. you. away. They’ve got oysters with watermelon granita and trout caviar; brussels sprouts, spaghetti squash, and toasted pumpkin seeds; a sweet potato terrine with candied pecans, candied bacon, and bourbon-maple whipped cream(!), and a bunch of other stuff that’ll make you don your fuzzy sweaters and thick socks.

They’ve also rolled out a way-impressive sounding update to their cocktail menu–and did you know they offered flights of beer?

Burger Bach will celebrate the opening of their second location–this one out in West Broad Village–with a special, wine event on Tuesday, October 22nd. Lynchburg native and founder of the New Zealand-based Puriri Hills, Judy Fowler, will be on hand for you to meet and chat. I’m not the right person to ask, but I hear Puriri Hill Bourdeaux-style wines are pretty great? I am, however, the right person to ask about Burger Bach’s french fries, and they are some of the best in Richmond. So there’s that.

The new Burger Bach is located at 2225 Old Brick Road near the Whole Foods. If you’re interested in attending RSVP to 804.359.1305. They’ll be open for business on the regular sometime in November.

Do you liked smoked meats? Specifically the pig-derived variety? Beagle’s BBQ is new and setting up shop over on the south side of the river in the “Parkside parking lot.” Food-cart-only for now, they’re contemplating a move to a less mobile location in the future. Check the Facebook to scout their current location before you head out.

Richmond BizSense is reporting that the Short Pump Osaka location, which is no longer owned by the EAT Restaurant Partners, has closed. If you absolutely cannot abide by this news, you’ll have to travel across the river to Midlothian. The EAT folks still own and operate an Osaka over in that neck of the woods.

Have you ever seen the bright pink RVA Vegan school bus / food truck around town? Owner Ed Edge has taken his colorful brand of vegan tacos and cupcakes and moved into 1801 E. Main Street. He hopes to open Cafe Verde some time in November and offer late-night fare (5:00 PM – 2:00 AM) to Bottomgoers.

It’s amazing how many food trucks are becoming brick and mortar hybrids. The newly opened “The Lair” which combines several food trucks including Chupacabra. I haven’t eaten their yet, but the people are super nice. You can find them at Adams & Main, cattycorner to The Jefferson.
