Food News: Pane e Vino opens, Jason Alley buys a farm, and a new breakfast option

Not even snow can keep new restaurants from opening in RVA (but it can keep them closed for lunch).

Pane e Vino is now open on Broad Street. This new Italian spot is brought to you by the guy who owns Piccola Italy, Maldini’s, and Mary Angela’s–so he’s got some experience.

Jason Alley, co-owner and executive chef of Pasture and Comfort, bought a farm. Not the farm, a farm. Along with the chef from Charlottesville-based Brookville Restaurant, they’ll farm the land and grow odd and hard-to-find produce. Before the most recent snow-related unpleasantness, they planned to have their first harvest in a couple of weeks.

The Daily Kitchen & Bar, which has been open for a while now, just added breakfast service this past Monday. They’ve got breads and bowls, eggs and omelette, and even bacon if you must (full menu here (PDF)). I love the effort to provide a real, veggie-friendly breakfast option!

PS. Make sure you check out the profile of The Daily and part owner Ted Wallof we ran this past Monday.

Because they hate themselves, RVAMag has compiled a giant list of local happy hours. This is no small task considering how hard restaurants can be to get a hold of, the sometimes bizarre restriction around publicizing happy hours, and the sheer number of happy hours around the city. I will salute them later this evening with a reduced-price alcoholic beverage!

EVO Fine Sichuan Cuisine is temporarily closed for repairs. This turn of events has been described as “sad because it was pretty good.”

Assuming restaurants are open tomorrow and life starts to return to normal, a ton of places in town are/were offering Valentine’s Day menus and specials. It’s probably best that you call ahead to make sure they’ll be open, but with most of Richmond incredibly snow adverse, it might be the perfect time to sneak in with no reservations.

Richmond.com has a list of restaurants that are closed for lunch on this lovely snow day.

There’s some work going on at the old McDonald’s on Forrest Hill. The permits indicate that it’ll be another fast food joint…I dunno, slow news week y’all.
